Why does everyone think that convertables are soooo much heavier than every other stang out there. According to the book "mustang 5.0 technical reference and performance handbook" (the god of all mustang books "
It says:

GT hatch manual =3191 pounds
GT hatch auto =3251
GT vert maual =3327
GT vert auto =3442

So the manual vert only weighs 136 pounds more than the manual hatch. That equals about .15 or less in the quarter mile. Sorry for going on an on but everytime someone sees i have a vert, they think i'm gonna run like 2 seconds slower, WTF. According to this wonderful book, my car should run LOW 14's completely stock!

Exactly right. Everyone seems to think that they weigh a ton more, but even autotrader says a vert only weighs like 150 lbs more than a hardtop. I like convertables

I'm not exactly sure why everybody thinks the verts weigh so much more...the only ones that seem to think that are the ones that believe every pound counts... ...there the ones that vacuum out their car before they head to the track...

I remember some members saying the vert would run a second slower with more mods than a coupe with slightly less mods...

It's not really the weight as much as body rigidity for alot of people. Even with a good cage and through the floor sub-frames. It still won't be as solid as a hatch or notch with the same mods... I do love my vert though..

For every 100lbs, you looe like 2 or 3 tenths or something in the 1/4 mile...i think its something like that.

Personaly, i hate them. I dont know why. I dont like to have wind in my hair, and i have bad luck and **** always gets in my eyes.

1/10th = 100lbs or vice versa...just a general rule...

I'll put it this way...if a vert pulled up beside me with the exact same mods to his car...I wouldn't count him out...thats for sure...I would know that it would be a good race...

actually, mustangpunk302, b/c of the large rear lift-gate, mustang hatches have much less torsional rigidity than notchbacks or convertables, this is known to develop cracks in the c-pillar area. and, the t-tops causes loss of significant structural unit-body stiffness.

I think the major bitch about the vert is the need for a roll bar at 13.99.. of course, I haven't had anything said to me at the track...
mine weighed 3375 with me in it.. but that was with almost no gas..

Another thing to consider is options.....air, power options etc the more options, the more the car will weigh. My 85 has tilt and a sunroof, other than that no options. Got to like that. The wireing in the dash is said to weigh 30lbs.

I have all three, convertible, hatch, and coupe. To say a convertible is more rigid than a hatch is absolutely foolish. I know what you mean about the quarters buckling, but where a hatch has those panels, a convertible has NOTHING! So how can you say it is more rigid? The convertible has the least rigid body of them all. Don't get me wrong, I like them all. My convertible ran 15.0 with 3.73's and exhaust. Granted it is an auto, so I wouldn't expect more than 14.7 with a manual with similar mods. Again, I like all of them, but the convertible is slower. Not by much, but slower.

I personally don't think verts are slower. Specialy if its got a 5spd. I want a vert just cuz i think getting a tan while driving is so cool plus. I havent meet a girl to this day that dosent dig a vet,they think ther sexy

Notch is most rigid, hatch is in the middle, t-tops next and convertible last. The point about options is worth noting - they make a difference. And typically, verts came with more options than, say, notches - not always, but most of the time. So when you start comparing a stripped down notch to a loaded convertible - in the foxes you can get to a 250 lb difference; it's even greater in the sn95 models as the design criteria for torsional rigidity was taken to the next step - they reinforced the verts more to try to make up for whacking the top off.

Well some of you are taking one way opinions. For example, Michael Yount posted that a stripped down notch and a loaded vert would be a 250 lb difference. That is probably true, but you can do the same thing the other way, and say a stripped down vert would weigh about the same as a loaded notch...

You can make any car heavier or lighter than another.

(Not trying to start a fight or make someone mad)
