There were splices going here, going there, jumpers going back and forth, ground wires screwed into the trunk. One of those wires was nickel size in diameter, so big it was pushing up on the door jamb where it was routed.
yeah, what's really bad is when they cut the original wiring up to splice in their aftermarket crap. Girl bought a Civic the about a month ago and some ricer had it before her, you could see where the wing had been screwed in along with the other crap body kit (drywall screw holes) and they had put one of those aftermarket HID kits in there, and instead of just leaving the original headlamp wiring alone, they completly cut the wiring to that away. Basically, she had to either put on another set because of course the one's that were on there weren't made anymore like most fly-by-night aftermarket rice crap, but she didn't like them so she did the smart thing and just got a harness and put the original hallogen stuff in there.

i had a problem like that but instead of havin to much wire they just had random splices. they wired in a harness out of somthing elese but didnt match up the wires to the components. so i had to find where the wires were rewire, fix splices, and then figure out how to make things work that they just cut for no reason. 8 hours and a roll of solder later i finally had a working stereo!!! some ppl shouldnt be allowed to touch cars

If I had to guess, they bought the wires with connectors on both ends, didn't know how to cut and crimp on new ones so they just stuffed the excess out of sight. I've seen it before.
Probably because every new owner has had the "run only what i want" idea and ran his own wires because he wasn't sure what the others where or where they went and was too lazy to pull them out.
I hate aftermarket systems. My foxes either keep the stock speakers and stereo, or they get an aftermarket CD player and some quality replacement speakers, but no amps, no subs, no 2 gauge wiring. effff that!
I was told by a wise old hotrodder that stereos are for sitting still.
Aside from long road trips, i agree.

My 85 was the same way when I bought it, had an eq, 3 amps 2 sub boxes and spaghetti everywhere............I gutted everything and left the deck.........took me about 6 hours to find and remove everything, not good

I ran all new speaker wire in mine when I had the interior out, but that is a little excessive, and I made sure mine was a nice clean install.

i corner better with the stereo cranked. before a turn i adjust the balance and let the air pressure from my speakers hold my car in line. That added weight won't help you corner any better...
