I just got my electric water pump installed and now I am almost done wiring it in but have a question. I need to connect it to a switched on 12 volt source just wanted some suggestons on what to connect to. Would the radio be ok or should I connect directly to the ignition switch or is there something in the engine compartment I can connect to thanks for any help.

Don't hook it to the radio or you'll be popping fuses like crazy. You can either hook it to the ignition or run a relay and put it on a switch inside the car (optimal for drag racing because you can hook the fan and water pump to run and cool things down between passes).

You could use the radio harness to energize the relay. Or, just use a DVOM and probe for something that is hot when the ignition is on. I can dig up some wiring diagrams on my service manual a little later tonight.

Yeah, as long as you have a relay wired, and the actual source of the 12V is not from the ignition signal, you will be fine. those relays use less than an amp to click over.

I can't think of anything obvious in the engine compartment that's an ignition switched 12V signal. But on the main harness, I am sure one of those wires on the main harness would work. I wish there was a better way than probing each wire for 12V.

I would actually keep the relay inside the car, and only run the 12V main lead to the pump. Just ground the relay and the water pump on the body of the car somewhere. That limits the number of wires in your engine compartment, and it also keeps the relay away from the heat of the engine.
