Garage Ideas

not sure if I can actually post in this section but this is where I know most of you guys. I'm in the works on putting a garage on the side of my house. I'm really constrained by the size of it 20x26 is the footprint I can do. My questions are for guys with garages what would you like to have what would you change? Guys with car lifts, what are the height restrictions on them? At the moment I'm thinking of doing 9' ceilings but not sure if car lifts require higher ceilings? Again if anyone has things to add I'm willing to hear them I have not started yet but I'm in the works of getting the loan approved and the permits filed shortly.

Shelving. Lots of it. And pegboard to hang stuff. The number one enemy I had with my small garage was clutter and lack of storage which results in loss of floor space. I never got to it in this house because I knew I was moving into a shop, but my old house had 1x12 shelves floor to ceiling all the way around the garage. I bought lumber and angle brackets at lowes and went to town.

Over due the electric service.. Big breaker box with lots of knock outs etc. makes it easier to add equipment later.. And lighting

9ft is gonna be a little low for a lift, the car alone is 4 and half feet tall ,most are around 11 or 12 foot ceilings when parking underneath ,but I suppose if you just want it off the ground it would work.

I'm thinking 10 foot will be my maximum that I can go I'll post a picture up later today where it's gonna be

Definitely put a vent with a fan up top. It's great in the summer to get rid of that hot air. Close the vent up in the winter, and put a fan blowing down to keep the heated air circulating (if you're going to heat it)

If you're going to have a lift, put some lights around the car. I have two single garage doors in mine, with 8' fluorescent's on the sides and in between the doors. Also lights in front for when the hood is open etc etc. Your extra height will help here, mine is only 8' walls.

This is where my garage is going to be attached to the house from the ground to bottom of soffit is 9'6" and I'm only going as far back as my electric meter. I will however have the garage bump forward about 3 feet to make my 25' I'm looking for. The trusses will go in opposite directions the house trusses are sitting now.

I just measured my lift, it is a full size one is almost 12'6" from the top of the cross beam to the floor.

I bought this house because of the shop,the lift was the 1st major purchase after moving in. Took me a long time to finally get one but I finally did, i suggest it to any car guy.

Does the lift bars slide inside the rail? My buddy has a lift but it has the hydraulic cylinders that go up with the bars so he can only bring the car up 3.5 feet before the cylinders hit his ceiling.. If this lift stays contained in itself like I need I can fit the lift between the trusses I would think I'm not gonna totally finish the garage off . I might have just confused everybody though with this

I sure would like a shop like that for Christmas. The only problem is that the only Santa that I know wears a pair of ragged old pants and a stretched out tee shirt. He has more lint in his pockets than money or big gifts...
