289 Oil Pressure???

I just got the 289 back in my 65 and fired it up. I have converted to the Haneline instrument panel so I now have an oil pressure gauge for the first time. It is nearly pegging the meter at 80 psi at idle. Is this reasonable??? Could the sender be wrong?

While the engine was out the oil pan was off, the timing chain replaced, new valve covers and the block was painted. The internals were not disturbed.

Did you get a new oil pump?

In any event, Id check your gauge by hooking up a mechanical one and comparing readings.

The oil pump was not touched.

make sure the wire for the sender isnt grounding out somewhere.

I put a new set of VDO gauges with sensors in mine and it also nearly pegs at 80 when I first start it up.

I have a new stock type oil pump in an old rebuild and run regular 10W30.

After driving, it drops down to a reasonable pressure that varies depending on the temperature and RPMs (between 30-60psi).

Are you giving it a chance to fully warm up?

What weight oil are you using?

yea, when the car is cold the oil pressure is going to be much higher, let it warm and it should drop down...if not, check how its wired and such..

I just rewired the car using the painless kit. I am an Elect Engineer so I am pretty confident that the wiring is OK. Because of other problems it hasn't run long enough to get up to temperature. It's running 10W30.

Mine pegs at 82 when started and then settles to mid 70's when warm. This is a good thing.

A good rule of thumb is 10 points of pressure for each 1.000 RPM's.

Funny how different engine builds produce different oil pressures!

Mine starts out at, and pretty much stays at 50, unless I get on it, then it goes up. I've never seen mine go above 60, but it's all stock internals.

Seems to be normal, mine shoot right up to 80 or more, than settles to 50 or so like said before, of course I have a Melling high volume pump.

I fired it up last night and let it run. After a few minutes the pressure began to drop and it settled a little below 50 psi at 180 degrees. I guess I'm OK.
