Do you think the coil would get too hot if mounted just above the intake?

Never thought I would have a problem drilling holes in an engine bay. I really don’t want to.

The designers put the coil on the inner fender to remove heat and vibration issues that could (and did in some instances) occur.
This is, of course, just a rumor and not based on any real evidence that I know of

If that's an msd coil it will probably fail without the heat, so i can only imagine what will happen over the intake.

Ford somewhat put the coil over the intake on the 94/95 Mustang and on the 91-93 Cougarchicken. These are the same coils as our fox cars

5.0 exploreres use a different wasted spark type coil, but they are where the dist used to be.

4.6L Mustangs also use engine mounted coils, and moderns cars all literally stick the coils in the spark plug holes.
