Hello,
I am brand new to the forum. I have a 1965 convertible with a 289 C code engine and automatic transmission. I don't run it often but I noticed that it is making a rattling noise from the water pump area. It is not leaking fluid, and the fan is tight. Does anyone know if a water pump is going bad, does it always leak? I cant tell if it is the water pump, or maybe the alternator. Everything seems tight and it runs well. Thank you

Water pump bearing could be giving you a warning, or it could be the timing chain, distributor, or even the camshaft. If you know how to safely use a mechanic's stethoscope, get one and use it to narrow it down. If not, find a shop near you that specializes in classic or performance cars (so they'll have someone who knows what they're doing with an older car) and take it to them.
