whats involved in cleaning fuel injectors???

Going to Wal-Mart and buying a can of Castrol Fuel Injector cleaner. I think you can take them apart and clean them also. Sounds like a pain though. Fuel Injectors are complex and I would not trust myself to take one apart and put it back together correctly.

The easiest way is to go to your local auto parts store and buy a good quality gas treatment for your injectors. The best way is to have them proffesionally cleaned by an auto repair facility. They will tap into your fuel system and use a much higher quality cleaner than what you find at the local a/p store and the results will be much greater and worth the money you paid to have it done. May cost some where around $100.00 give or take depending on the area you live in. :nice:

The injectors themselves are not made to be disassembled. :nonono:

I once watched one of those car repair DIY shows and they did a heavy duty injector cleaning. From what I remember they unhooked the fuel pump relay then ran the motor to bleed off the fuel in the fuel rails and then hooked up a spray can sized can to the schrader valve turned the can upside down then started the car and ran it until the can ran empty. It was supposed to do a much better job that the in tank stuff but be less expensive than taking it to a shop to have them cleaned. I would like to do this to my '89GT. My only question is do our fuel injection fuel rails have a schrader valve? I know some do and some don't.

all came with them.... there not located on the fuel rail its self, but rather the fuel line that connects to the fuel rail..... you can miss it, just trace the line from the fuel rail down, and you will see it!!!

I actually had my mechanic to a injector cleaning process like pro50sc was talking about for like 50$. And for my 100+k mile stock injectors it made a huge difference. The weekend after that i took a long trip on the highway and got 27MPG. It was well worth the $$. The store bought stuff works alright too, but that is more preventative maintenance than anything else. Every time you change your oil spend the 2$ and throw some in.

See http://www.cleaninjectors.com/process.html

When you get doen with that, you'll need the seal kits...
Fuel injector seal kits with 2 O rings and a pintle cap (Borg-Warner P/N 274081) are available at Pep Boys auto parts. Cost is about $2.74 per kit. The pintle caps fit either injectors with a pin sticking out the injector end or 4 with more tiny holes in the injector end. The following are listed at the Borg-Warner site ( http://www.borg-warner.com ) as being resellers of Borg-Warner parts:

Most of the links above have store locators for find a store in your area.
