Quad Shocks Questions

Hey guys,
i have a few questions about quad shocks and lca;s...
i just recieved my standard mm lca;s and i plan to install them on friday...
i have been looking over the install from the mm website and it looks pretty simple, but i was going to remove my quad shocks after i put in the mm lca;s...
i was looking under the car, and i actually couldnt see them...
first off, does anyone have any good pics of what the quads would look like and where i can find them on my 01 gt? i tried searching but couldnt really find any good pics...
i honostly think that the quads where taken off my car... i currently have the mm coil overs, but i am wondering what actuall effects the quads would have on the handling of the car supposing i dont have the quads in right now? i know that mm says they help position the axle... but what actual handling effects would be gained once i install my mm lca's which dont require the stock quads...?

also, i am sure people here have installed the mm lca;s before... how easy was the install?; any tips? i know i have to torque the bolts with the suspension loaded.:D
any other tips?

If you don't have them in, you don't need them once you install the MM units.

A good, long breaker bar will help, as will an extra set of hands. If you have a lot of mileage on the car, some PB blaster will help loosen the bolts (they may be frozen). Other than that, it's fairly straight forward.

yea i definately do not have them in my car now, i thought they would look similar to that in the pic...
why the hell would the previous owner remove them on a stock suspension?

i dont think the bolts should be too difficult to get out especially on te axle side, because i took those out about 4 months ago when i put in my coilovers!

one last questions, though, how do u think my handling would improve now if i did get the quad shocks? or since i am getting the lca';s wich will do the quad shocks job, how much more/what else is going to happen or is anything even really going to be different now that i actually have something that will perform the quad shocks job?

Quad shocks are not required with aftermarket LCAs.

Not always. Depends on the car/suspension/tire setup. Saying they aren't needed for all mustangs is untrue. I know plenty of guys who have had wheelhops with aftermarker LCA's and cured them by simply putting the quad shocks back on.


Honestly, unless you need room for bigger tires, i see no reason to remove them.

Both my Mustangs still have their quad shocks
 
I'm actually wanting to put a pair of quads on my 91 today. Wheel hop is insane, I've probably already tore my rearend up. Whoever took them off was a moron. Anyway.. sorry for hi-jacking, but is the foxbody quad setup similar to that picture? I know I have the stud coming off the frame where you bolt the top of the quad to, but what does it connect to down below? somewhere around the drum or what? I don't remember seeing anything it could bolt to down there. Anyone know? mustang5L5, do you know? seeing as you have a fox with the quads still on?

The quad shock setup is the same on the Fox as it is with the newer cars. The above picture would apply to you as well.

The quad mounts to the top of the axle. There will be a flange right behind the drum. If you look at the pic you will see it.

That's assuming you have an 8.8 mustang axle in your car. The 7.5" did not come with quads, so it doe not have this mount.


Autozone sells a Gabriel replacement quad shock. It's listed under "steering dampener" Part number 14039. They are $25 each, but i think you need to buy them online.
 
I have aftermarket Lakewood LCA's and still have my quad shocks. I really don't see what you gain by removing them. A whole 10lbs off the rear end by the tires where you probably want it anyways :shrug: . UNless of course you are trying to clear a ridiculously huge tire because i got no issues with a 18x10 out back and a nice-szed tire.
Any clue as to what the real advantages are ot removing the quad shocks? Its like a 10 minute process so if its really that helpful, i might do it.

Well, you're right - it ain't much, but every bit counts. Typically folks will remove the quad shocks when they have easy access as they swap out LCAs.
Also consider that the 10 LBs or so is unsprung weight...much more advantageous of a loss than sprung weight.
 
Take the quads off. I just finished my install of my MM LCA's, D-Spec Shocks and Struts, and Steeda Sport Springs. You already have coilovers so you probably won't notice as dramatic a difference as I did. Unbelievable the ride difference. My car hooks like hell now but it drives kinda like a logging truck. Damn the suspension is stiff.
