A little heavier oil may help. Could be a chain tensioner not pumping up (or a bad one) or you have valve train noise. I know it goes against what most here believe as far as oil additives go but try some Lucas Oil or similar before you replace 50 bucks worth of oil. If it quiets down then you know a heavier oil will suffice. Should be OK until the next change.

I stopped by a dealership today to have someone else's ear on it.

The tech said that he could definitely hear "something", but he couldn't (or wouldn't) say what he thought it was. He wanted me to make an appointment to have it looked at more in depth.

He did say the noise sounded more like it was coming from underneath the car rather than the top end.

So, I don't know what could be making a "ticking/clicking" under the car with the car in neutral or driving along. Also it doesn't matter if the clutch is engaged/disengaged.

I'm at a crossroads as to what I'm going to do. In the next few weeks I was going to be ordering the Kenne Bell 2.1L and running it with the 9lb pulley until I could get a forged bottom end. Now, I'm worried that as soon as I get the KB the motor will blow.

Looks like it's going to be the forged motor BEFORE the KB, which is they way it should be I guess.... I mean it doesn't make any sense to put any money into fixing the stock shortblock and then replacing it in a year or so with a forged one. Nor does it make sense in having a brand new KB and a blown motor right after..

Stupid cars for jerks..

Not trying to jack your thread but i have a tick that does the same exact thing only its coming from my clutch area. I just reaplaced the clutch but before my last clutch went(king cobra) it made the same noise. when it was replaced i was told the throw out bearing was the only thing that really neaded to be replaced and it was what the ticking was. I have the spec stage 2 kit now( i know i know i should have bought something else) and it came with a new throw out bearing but being that it's spec, could that be the problem? cause its a loud tick until the car it at about 2500 and rolling.

OK, I did some more investigating..

I folded up a piece of paper and stuck between the set screw so that the engine was revving at just under 1500rpm..

I found the following:

1) It is NOT a top-end noise. I can't really hear it under the hood

2) The tick is coming from under the car and I can hear it almost equally on both sides. At first I listened to the driver's side under the car and I thought it was that header, but then I went to the passenger side and I could still hear it roughly the same..

At this point I'm baffled.. I don't have a clue as to what it is, but it's getting worse..

Tonight I drove around for a bit and that's all I can hear.. Cruising at 35mph in 3rd it's all "Tick tick tick tick"....

I had that same ticking and mine sounded like it was coming from under my car too. I assumed it was my clutch, like i said on page one. but my ticking also got really loud, exactly how you are saying yours is. well it turned out to be the sparkplug in cylinder #2 cause on the way home i had a lovely sparkplug blowout. it destroyed my coilpack and somehow the plug ended up hutting the piston. long story short, very bad day.

if i were you, i'd check all my plugs and coilpacks. I somehow got lucky with mine and didn't tear up anything in the motoe(that i know of so far)my plugs were fairly new too so if yours are i'd still chang them. I now have 0 ticking noise so your noise could be a precursor of my very bad day.
