Hey;

Anyone know what my 2004 GT has for stock gears?
Also, when I upgrade in the spring, what should I go with?
I its my ALMOST daily driver from April-November, so I don't want to go 4:10 as it would be too low and MPG would severely suffer...

Thanks

If the rear end is untouched, it has 3:27 gears. I read several threads on 3:73 being a good gear for a daily driver. I drive mine 100 miles a day & there next on the list.

Bang for the buck, 4.10's are going to be your best bet. Also, 4.10's are not too low for a daily driver. Mileage will only decrease by 1-3mpg max. Unless you are mashing the throttle all the time. At 70 mph on the highway, I am only turning just below 2400rpm. Don't fear the gear!:nice:

Your car should have 3.27's. If you commute alot then 3.73 is the way to go, I can cruise at 70mph and still be under 2k RPMs-or right there on it. As far as gears go, for the money, you cant buy a better mod :nice:

3.73s here.

I wouldn't be too averse to the 5th gear highway RPM associated with 4.10s. But 4th gear must be a joke. Even with 3.73s, in 4th I'm nearing 4000RPM at 120-130KPH (75-80MPH). I personally would definitely find the around-town uselessness of 1st gear with 4.10s to be very annoying. Sometimes I wish I'd gone for 3.55s but I wouldn't go to the expense or trouble to swap them out now.

I'm getting geared hopefully within 3 months for track season. I like the 4:10s, but i'm gonna be going with the 3:73. I figure, if the 4:10s are at average a 3 mpg loss, i should have a .5-1mpg loss with the 3:73. Also i can't stick as is at the track, let alone 4:10.

I've driven plenty of cars with 3.55's, 3.73's, 4.10's and 4.30's. All of those gears are streetable in a 2v.

The only real benefit with 4.10's or lower is at the track with a taller tire. Unless you can slip the clutch extremely well, 4.10's will not help and hurt your performance on a 17 inch tire.

I almost pulled a 2.0 60' with 4.10's on street tires. It's do-able, but it takes practice.

I agree 100% if you are going to hit the track with 4.10's you need a sticky tire to take full advantage of them, or else you may walk away dissapointed.

I got a 2.0XX with my 3.27's gears. I regularly get 2.1's. Who needs gears anyway?

Anyway, get the gears that let you just run out 4th at the mph you plan to run at the track. In my 97, I have to go to 4th around the 1000' mark and that cost me a lot of time. In that respect, gears would help. The other option is to make the car faster so I am trapping faster. :p

You want to cross the traps just above your power band. The 4cyl is at 6000rpm when I cross the traps, which is pretty much the very edge of the power band. This is about perfect, but to go faster, I may need to get a cam to help the engine breath up top. I'm still running a truck cam... from a ford Ranger.

I've got 4.10's and I drive 40 miles every day I get an average of 18-19 mpg driving city/hwy. I also have an auto. 3.73 were my other choice If I were to do it all over. for a daily driver / take the car on long trips I'd get 3.73's.

The misinformation is killing me. First brands of gears don't whine, bad installations cause whine. If Motive gears are whining it's because the installer didn't set the wear pattern properly. Second fuel economy suffers from steeper gears because people get a heavier foot and secondly from cruising at a higher RPM on the freeway. The cruising speed MPG diffence is minimal maybe 1 MPG tops and that's from going from a stock 3.27 to a 4.30 (real world numbers in my car cruising at 65-70 to work over a 4 year period). Getting on the gas from light to light will hurt your mileage but that is driver controlled. No difference than adding a supercharger to a car...I shift at 2k and stay under 3k RPM and I get 22 MPG in my car, I shift at 2500-3000 got WOT a few times and that number drops to 20 MPG.

weelll, i dunno..motives are notorious for whine. I mean, rumors like this don't just get around for no reason.. even on craigslist and stuff, the major selling point of the FRPP is 'does not whine'..i just don't trust motives. For one it's made in italy, is it not? ..i'd rather buy something with out a bad rep.
