Show me your custom steering wheel . . .

Due to my 6'3" tall frame and needing to install a roll bar in my 65' stick Mustang, I must part with the stock 15 1/2" woodgrain steering wheel to gain critical knee clearance. Too bad no one makes a good small repo of the stock wheel.

Anyways, I am looking for recommendations for a nice 14" or so steering wheel that won't break the bank. It must be compatible and look good in an early Stang with stock like interior.

Anyone have some good experiences to share?

Photos in a Stang would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I like my wooden grant steering wheel. Mine is big, stock size but I think they make them smaller:

I have the 13 1/2" version of what pyroman has and like it. The only thing is the horn button is a pain. I had to glue it on to keep it from popping off.

I stay away from Grant, the fit and finish of the rim is usually horrible, around the D– level in a high school shop class, and the horn buttons fall off if you even say the word "pothole", something that hasn't changed in 40 years, so I doubt they'll fix it now. Even when they don't fall off, they spark little light shows when you blow the horn at night.

If you want a wheel your diameter with extreme high quality, at about twice the price of Grants junk, get one of these:

Have you considered extending the seat tracks at the back end? Works wonders for tall people.

Oh yeah, I extended the tracks 2 inches and dropped the seat pans too. Another trick is I tossed the pony door handles and went with the standard one. There is just enough room to slam the clutch at the track BUT that room will disappear once the roll bar is installed.

the lecarra doesn't have much dish, but the adapter is about 5 inches tall. also, for what it is worth, after about ten years, mine looks like hell. the varnish has peeled in places and the wood is chipping. pretty disappointing considering how much i payed for it.

try to find an old superior wheel on ebay and just redo it. they are all over the place and you can't find an old grant on ebay because they fall apart. i've seen 40 year old superior wheels that have been re-stained/varnished and they look like new.

I agree, I don't like the Grant wheels either. I hate the Grant GT generic wheels at the auto parts stores. Those are junk.

I like that reproduction Shelby wheel.

I think I will just stick with the stock reproduction wheel. In my opinion it looks the best, at least in my car or one setup similarly.

Also, Keep in mind that you may not want a smaller steering wheel if you do not have power steering.

My friend had this wheel and it has actually shocked people before. I have seen the light show that was mentioned. Also the horn button would fall off. I do think that this wheel looks decent though.

You can order a dished mustang wheel from Moto-Lita. they will also do a custom job.

Well, here is a cheap crappy grant wheel as many of you state. It is by far from perfect but for a driver, it works great. This horn button has never came off while driving as it takes the removal of the allan head screws to be removed. It is the Collector edition....$240 on their site. It was on this car when I bought it. I changed the horn button from the standard Grant GT type to the V8.

The base model Grant wheel does have some issues with the horn button that have never been addressed. I have had good and bad with them.

If you squint real hard at the photo, you can see "Moto-Lita" on the left spoke. Glazier/Nolan has used quite a few of these, they really like them, because they look and work great, and they don't get warranty problems with them.
