Damned good question, since many drive with both feet that way. You are to be commended for thinking of that! It's more important and significant than meets the eye.

By the time you lift off the brake and get on the gas, the engine has already started and is waiting for you.

The crank time is much shorter than a car without the feature
How can that be guaranteed given all the variables? What about moisture intrusion from rain, mist, road mist, underhood high humidity conditions? Do you think an engine can restart ALWAYS within a second or two?

Hence why I said:

While cars using the various start/stop systems are new, they work great. Once these engines have a couple hundred thousand miles on them, and the starters have been engaged a few thousand times more often than a normal starter, we'll see how they hold up.

To be honest, while drive-by-wire is really un-necessary (though I completely understand why the manufacturers ALL switched to it), it is very reliable. Of the three drive-by wire cars I've personally owned, only one has had any trouble, and among all the drive-by-wire vehicles my family has owned (9 cars in total) only 2 (including my one) have had drive-by-wire issues. All of the same fears about start-stop applied to drive-by-wire when it was a new technology as well, and while inconvenient in some cases (like my F150), drive-by-wire has proven the majority of nay-sayers wrong. Start-stop will probably end up being the same way.
 
I was inspecting a car for Mercedes Financial that had the start stop feature. The person in possession of the car was the son of the original elderly owner.
He was unaware of the start-stop feature, he was telling me when he came to a stop for the first time and the car shut off he was in a panic trying to restart the vehicle.
Obviously as this technology becomes more prevalent issues like that shouldn't happen, but I would imagine there's going to be some mechanical growing pains.
Most likely at some point there will be a component that has a manufacturing defect causing issues/ recall.
Now if that component is in your nav system or seat heater it's inconvenient but usually not dangerous. If it's is in the system that stops/starts your vehicle automatically...could be dangerous.
Look at the Takata airbag situation...fantastic life saving technology that has been around for years, but a manufacturing defect has caused a dangerous situation.
But what do I know, just an opinion.

Hanging around the shop I've seen 1 or 2 cases od dbw problems, one was on her focus when a coil was bad sending spark to the block, they are very dependable and durable. I suspect the s/s will be the same, I don't like it, I like control,
I'm keeping my old cars but she gets new stuff. She don't like it when I 'work' on her car. She don't want to go sideways.

Take yourself to a new car dealership and sample it for yourself then. The technology is already over 10 years old in German cars. It's just now catching up to domestics because of a gvt. mandate on emissions and fuel economy.
That's ten years of getting it right...No commercials on morning TV from ambulance chasers with intro' s that sound like:
"If you have a car with auto start stop, and you were mangled by a Mack truck when it didn't start again, ( cause it was rainy/misty/or just excessively humid) Call the law offices of Goldberg and Kanoph now!"
The electronic circuitry you're talking about is in the ECU, and they're typically inside the car. If any water is getting in there, you might be driving a submarine.

And as an FYI since the scenario was already asked about above,..the engine will shutoff on you while sitting in the intersection waiting on a left turn opportunity.....

You just give the steering wheel a slight tug, and the engine restarts, and remains on until the next time the car comes to a stop.

Those engineers....what will they think of next:rolleyes:. Just another way to try and save the 4 billion gals of gasoline wasted each year in the US by cars that sit around and idle in traffic.

Engines are now direct injected, cam and valve timing varies with engine load. A warm engine starts in less than one revolution, and is hardly a strain on the starter. It'll be one more thing that gets critically looked at as the car ages, the starters and batteries are already significantly more robust in German cars because of that. I've seen 08 BMWs with over 100k on old tech FI engines that still restart faster than you can move your foot off the brake.

I think years from now when all cars are full electric, we'll look back on cars from this era and mock them. Every day they become increasingly and senselessly more complex and expensive, and the returns on efficiency and emissions are rapidly approaching zero. I'm as much or more a fan of engines that rely on loosely contained petroleum explosions as the next guy, but this horse we're beating has been dead for a while.

In a BMW after the engine shuts off, you cannot get your foot off the brake pedal and onto the gas pedal quicker than the restart process..In other words, by the time your foot is on the gas, the engine is running. There is no start up lag.
There was a button next to the start/stop button that would've disabled that....once that button was pushed, ( light illuminated) it doesn't shut off at intersections, or stop signs anymore.

And it's another thing people are gonna just have to suck up, and get used to, because it's a federal mandate in all new cars from 2018 on......Auto stop/start is proven to save gas and reduce emissions based on its usage in Europe. It'll be enforced here in the US as well.

There was a noticeable lag between taking my foot off the brake and accelerating in regular mode vs Sport for someone who wasn't expecting it. I was probably something you adjust to pretty quickly, but encountering it for the first time in Boston rush hour traffic, I elected to never deal with it again. Besides it was a rental BMW and vacations are supposed to be fun and Sport mode is more fun with the added benefit that it didn't turn off at stop signs. An interesting side effect was that if you were driving in regular mode and someone pushed the button to put it into Sport mode, the car would accelerate. Apparently the throttle curve is different as well.

If auto start/stop allows us to have access to a V8 engine for just a little longer, I will gladly welcome its adoption as long as I have an option to disable it.

Yes, as intended, "Sport mode" throws away any semblance of efficiency, and auto start/ stop is temporarily disabled. Until you turn the car off. Then it'll revert back to comfort. The increased accel was because in comfort mode, there is a " buffer" in the distance of throttle movement to keep the car in constant cruise. ( makes for a less twitchy throttle, gives more of a cushion between getting on/off the throttle) Sport mode eliminates the buffer, and the car accelerates because of that.

Agreed. Anybody that has ever been lucky enough to experience the power of a Tesla ( I have, and in Ludicrous mode....it's ludicrous) 700 ft lb of torque, zero to 60's in under 4 seconds, and 200+ miles on a charge, w/ no noise, no emissions, no $ 5 a gal gasoline ( when that happens again) and you fill it up, at home.

Electric cars are also mandated to make up over 75% of a auto dealers offerings by 2025...it's gonna happen boys,..just as surely as digital replaced analog, FI replaced carburetors, and turbochargers help replace big inch engines.

Maybe I'll be the first one to convert a hobby car over to full electric....an electric monster...

We diverted from Mustangs to stop start issues. Here's my two cents: I have driven in the last 3-5 years, about 12-15 start stop rentals in Europe, Mercs., Audis, Fords, and some tiny French cars whose names I have repressed.
I have not driven any BMWs or VWs, so maybe they are better.
Bottom line, I push the button to defeat the start stop if I can find the button. They all reset when the ignition is turned off.
Driving into the famous English roundabouts usually with heavy traffic with the Audi( tiny diesel) was not safe. It did start quickly but had no power for a critical second while trying to merge into the roundabout. I also used two foot-- brake and gas (kerosene?) and then it would buck several times, an enlightening experience!
I also think about the wear and tear of the starter and the flywheel ring gear with these systems.
They are coming to the USA so we can all experience them. In the meantime, I will start and stop in my LX with the clutch, brake and gas.
