Water hammer? Or what is it?

What is confusing to me is why it does not click/hammer without the thermostat. Even though the thermostat is VERY tight in the housing.

Water hammer? Or what is it?

I can answer some of them. The coolant is distilled water with 30% Prestone and Water Wetter. The rad cap is 14 lbs. and the hoses are firm when hot, indicating pressure. The car does not overheat, so I beleive the new water pump is providing flow. I don't have a car domain site that I know of.

Water hammer? Or what is it?

I did that w/ a 1/8 inch hole at the 12 o'clock position. Still clicks/hammers. Thanks for the thought.

Water hammer? Or what is it?

By the way, I can feel the pulse in the hose when each click happens. It is not in time with the motor RPM. So, to summarize: new water pump, new stat (RTV used to hold stat tight), bypass hose is clear, and it still clicks/hammers. It does not happen when I run without a stat. So frustrating.

Water hammer? Or what is it?

I thought that either air was trapped or the stat was loose. So as an experiment, I drilled a 1/8 hole on the side of the stat plate and used RTV to glue the stat in place (very tight anyway in the housing) and let it dry for a day before adding water. Still makes the light hammering noise...

Water hammer? Or what is it?

There is an irregular tapping sound at the thermostat housing. I have tried several types and temps of stats and replaced the water pump. When I run without a stat the sound is gone. I have confirmed that the stats are squezzed between the housing cut out and the intake surface. I am out of...

    Sound opinions

68EFIvert, is it still fairly loud when you put your foot to the floor? Is there any sort of "drone" at 2000-2500 rpms? I bet it sounds great.

    Sound opinions

My 68 vert w/ a 302 has 20" glasspacks and tri-ys. That was fine until I put in a more aggressive cam (.48 lift, 210 duration - a torque cam, but still much louder than stock). Now the car is too loud for me. Two questions: 1. Should my new system have 2 1/4 inch piping or a different...

    302 surprise

I just pulled the heads on my 68 C code (should be a 289, 2V) to put on new heads and cam. Surprise! The block said 302 and the stroke measured 3 inches. The block code was C8oe and the heads were '68 302 2V heads. I know the engine was rebuilt several years ago, but I'm surprised that the...

    302 Engine Noise

Check your timing chain. I just pulled mine off to change the heads and found that it was very worn.

Any body seen a reall 1966 GT350 Convertible

66 GT350 Vert I saw one of the 80's reproductions yesterday at the Shelby production facility next to the Speedway in Las Vegas. It is dark blue w/ white stripes and a white top - owned by Carroll. BTW, the tour is at 10:30am M-F and free. The best part is really the 20 or so cars in the...

    Can I keep the cam?

Thanks, Woodsnake. If one were to use the package, would the cam specs need to be considered or can it be assumed that it is matched to the other components? Neither Jegs nor Summit idenifies the specific cam properties in the kit. At this point, I'm pursuing heads only, but want to learn...

OK. I appreciate your endless patience. Heads it is.

    Can I keep the cam?

$3000 is pretty close to a basic crate engine, right? Great. Now I've talked myself into a complete motor swap. Good think I love the car.

    Can I keep the cam?

My guess is that its a stock cam. I say this because the motor is very smooth and starves out above 4000rpm. I bought the car after the motor had about 7,000 on a rebuild. The shop in Portland that did it is no longer in business and I have run into dead ends trying to find out what...

    Can I keep the cam?

OK I'll bite. If I use the $ to replace the cam, do I need to do anything to the rockers? I'm wondering about the pressed in studs vulnerability. And, will the stock stamped rockers handle, say, .50 of lift?

    Can I keep the cam?

I understand that quite a few early '68s had the C code 289. Wish I had a "W" code, if that really existed in my year and model. Barring that, a 331 is somewhere in my future.

    Can I keep the cam?

$2000 left, including labor (I don't trust my limited skills to set up heads/push rods, etc). So, it looks like good heads (AFR, TW, Canfields) are at least $1500 for the pair. With shipping, tax, incidentals, I figure $1650, leaving $350 for labor - not much! What I hope to gain is an...

    Can I keep the cam?

I just changed to a 5 speed and 3.55 diff. The money is almost gone. The car does great off the line, but the stock/soundly rebuilt 289 wheezes over 4000 rpms. It has an Edel Performer intake, 500 cfm 4 barrel, and tri-ys. Here is what I'm considering: AFR 165 heads w/ 1.7 rockers. Leave...

    Rotation Questions

Thanks guys. Thats all good info. As for the 8", it is a 28 spline with a 4 pin/4 spyder Traction Lock and the later "waffle case".
