    I'm guessing from the description that you're replacing the Shaker 500: good call. Speakers first for the most bang for the buck... actually there's a lot more room in the door panels than you'd think. You can easily replace the upper components with 5 x 8's or 6 x 9's with minor, if any...

    You may be able to get away with 1/2" if the box is ported; if it's a sealed box, invest in the 3/4" as it will be more rigid and produce tighter bass. IMO

    And recommended size varies by subwoofer manufacturer; be sure to read the suggestions. (For example, ported boxes must be significantly larger than sealed, and with sealed the more the power the smaller the box). And JC3052 is exactly right about the 3/4" MDF. Good luck.

    Will the new head unit power the speakers, or are you planning to tie into the existing amps? You shouldn't have any trouble if you get the wiring harness adapter (from Crutchfield, or BB or CC) and then use existing amps/speakers. Head unit won't matter unless amps are on-board.
