how do i check my starter?

Take the starter to any parts store and they will test it for free. As long as it works on the bench, it should work in the car. I wouldn't get too worried about whether the gear will engage the flywheel or flexplate. -Matthew

    First Engine Mods?

I spent a lot of time dyno testing electric fan / 3G alternator combinations on my car. I found that with the electric fan, the stock alternator just wasn't enough. The car would discharge and ocassionally idle rough because of low system voltage. I put a 3G in, and it solved all of the...

    Anyone use a spacer before?

I ran a 3/8" spacer on an Explorer intake. No hood clearance problems, and the upper definitely stays cooler. The spacer improved ET on a hot lap at the drag strip by 2 to 3 tenths. With the spacer, I could get two back to back runs that were very similar, without it, the second run would always...

    One header tube glowing?

The main reason headers glow red is retarded timing. Check your firing order, and check all of the ignition parts. -Matthew

    Which intake is better?

I'd think about a Performer RPM myself. I've seen the Typhoon intake whistle pretty bad - not every one I've seen does this, but I have seen more than one do it. If you are really on a budget, you might find an Explorer intake kicking around somewhere. From your two choices, I would probably...

    351w block

Any year 351W will work. '83 and up use a one piece rear main seal, which leaks a little less than the older two piece style and can be replaced without pulling the rear cap. The earliest blocks have a slightly shorter deck height, but that's only the first 2? years or so of production. Price...

Anyone have a McLeod "Dual Performance" clutch?

I've got a McLeod street/strip single disk clutch in my 351W car. It takes 2nd gear burnouts all day and runs 1.56 60' times no problem. Ran 11.93@116 at a 2200 ft track. The car completely destroyed a King Cobra in 12 passes. I've been running this clutch for three years and would highly...

    HUGE problem with my predator!!

If you're really worried, just pull 10% timing out of the predator tune. I personally wouldn't worry about it though. -Matthew

    Install on Cams?

Re: the questions about exhaust with this change: - The heads can be removed with the factory manifolds attached, no problem. - I installed Bassani "mid length" headers with a head swap. You can drop the passenger side head in with the header primary tubes (but not the collector) bolted...

Will stock valve covers work on TFS heads?

I used stock 5.0 valve covers with TFS track heat heads and Crane blazers, all with a Comp 292R solid roller cam. You have to remove the baffles and grind a few other spots on the valve covers, but they work fine. -Matthew

    TKO transmisson suggestions

Use a numerically larger final drive (rear end), and go with the TKO 600. It's the same transmission as the TKO 500, but has a higher torque rating because of the taller first gear. I have a TKO 600 in a 90 coupe with 4.56 final drive and the .64 overdrive. It works great on the highway with 28"...

    Tremec TKO600

That should be the item. The new driveshaft comes with the correct yoke. On my 90 there was at least 3/4" of travel at the transmission with the driveshaft installed and the suspension fully loaded. If you have similar travel, there will be no need to shorten the driveshaft. I heard the price...

    performance chip?

Disconnect your battery before you pull the computer. If there is a chip, it will be plugged into the J3 service port on the end of the computer opposite the wiring harness. Your best bet chip wise is to have one set up for your specific modifications, on a dyno if at all possible. -Matthew

    Tremec TKO600

I just went with the FRPP aluminum driveshaft for an SN95 car. The spline count is right, and I did not have to cut it to fit the TKO in my 90 coupe. -Matthew

    question about cams!

Forced induction works better with a larger lobe center angle and less overlap - the positive inlet pressure blows a portion of the charge right through to the exhaust during the overlap period. N/A setups normally work better with more overlap and a tighter lobe center angle as this aids in...

First P-51 Intake Running in Alberta

I would estimate your car to be about 231 on my MD-600, and coincidentally I have a very similarly configured reference car on file that made 230. -Matthew

H/C/I install, P-51 intake, with dyno results

You guys are right to notice that I have stock inlet/MAF/airbox, and stock mufflers and tailpipes. I think that makes an 02 GT that tests slightly better than a mildly modded 03 Mach I, way better than a typically modded 97 Cobra, and right there with a typical H/C/I 5.0 all the more impressive...

First P-51 Intake Running in Alberta

I'm saying that although the stock setup is rated 260 HP, the real output is closer to 280, as shipped. In that case, based on your method, the accessory and drivetrain loss is 71 HP. Because the power peak moved up over 10% from 4900 to 5400, accessory and drivetrain losses at the power peak...
