Newbie DIY Engine & Tranny Rebuild

Unless you want to invest in a dial indicator and base, and cam degree wheel, I would investigate having your machine shop assemble the short block and install and degree the cam. If you do this, specify that you want all clearances, torque specs, etc. used as part of their product. When you...

    front suspension experience

You should post this in the tech section, too. I have the TCP front suspension - installed it several years ago. It came with 500#/in springs, but they were too stiff, so I ordered and installed 400# springs. It's now a pleasure to drive and handles nearly as well as with the stiffer spring...

Holy **** that was a BIG black widdow

Leaving the hood open, or partially open, discourages spiders/mice/rats/squirrels/rabbits from messing around under the hood. It's a great idea if you are not driving the car much. I once tore down an old shed. And man the black windows were mad. They made a beeline for me. I looked like I...

    Milky oil

Those are usually 3/8" 12-point. You can use either a socket or a box-end wrench.

    school me on cutting springs...

I think the take-away message is that keeping the spring cool while cutting it reduces variation in the result.

    school me on cutting springs...

A bit less than what is cut off. The spring will get stiffer when you shorten it, so it won't drop the full amount that you cut. I don't know of a formula or good rule of thumb. Sorry. You didn't ask, but the cutting needs to be done without overheating the coil and thereby destroying the...

    Coolant Leaking frorm Exhaust?

Did your instructions call for re-torquing the head bolts? If you have carbon products in the coolant, that does point to a head gasket leak. When you analyze the coolant, pull it from the top of the radiator with a baster, or syringe - gas/oil floats on top of coolant.

    head bolt oil leak?????

Yeah. I have less experience with 351 blocks, but if his was a 351 roller block, then I was suspicious of him using a front cover-type dipstick and not plugging the hole in the block for block/pan rail mounted dipstick. It wouldn't be the first time.

FRPP Thermostat housing and bypass hose leak

Maybe you could try some silicone sealer applied to the housing and hose. LEt it cure for 24 hrs and see if that does it. Don't use too much sealer - you don't want a chunk coming off and roaming around in your cooling passages/water pump. Little would be fine.

    how do you know

If there are ball joints available with a grease fitting - get them. Else, frill/tap/install them yourself. Get the 90 degree fittings for easier greasing. This will go a long way to keeping them quiet over time.

    Cam/gear selection for 393w

Yeah, sounds petty good as you have it. Should make 450hp without a problem. What does the Desktop Dyno say?

Power up a 351W, what do I need

You have a reasonable HP target, given the state of your tranny and stall. You can make the power two ways: 1) 69 heads and moderate street cam - flat tappet 2) better heads and less cam "2" is more expensive, but will be better as the smaller cam will be more compatible with your transmission...

    Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch

The number I hear is 600hp. But that's an estimate. I imagine the real number should be in lb-ft, as torque is what the clutch holds. If you are running tires that will break loose before 500 lb-ft of torque can be applied, than I wouldn't worry about it.

    Stall under hard braking...

    Well, then: Nevermind.

How do you know if your rockers need adjusting?

Yeah, especially if you check and have good compression on all the cylinders. Leave 'em alone. If you have low compression, you may need to back off on the preload, but that (low compression) would have likely been a problem from the get-go.

    Stall under hard braking...

Big cam and power assist brakes? If so, you could be pulling a lot of vacuum off the manifold for the brakes and losing signal to the carb. If you think this is plausible, a vacuum canister may help. Hydroboost brakes would be, perhaps, the best way to go, if you have power steering. In my case...
