    Is the PCV system hooked up and functioning? If you are getting oil to the plugs it is coming from somewhere. PCV, ring blow-by, or valve stem seals are the likely suspects.

    If it isn't flat, sand it until it is flat. It won't take long and the pitting should be removed at the same time.

    That sucks! Re-read post #5. Following this process can take care of the pitting and get the surfaces flat. When it is apart check closely for cracks.

    I would try the original cable if it is still available. A new OEM replacement would be the next step. If neither of those is an option a used one from a junked car may be the best option. Parts store parts is hit or miss these days. Mostly it's crap.

    I installed the B&M Hammer shifter in the late '90's when the factory shifter broke. I don't recall drilling any new holes during installation, although it has been a minute since that time. It's always worked just fine, well,....when the car was running that is. :D

    Clean as much of the inner cable as you can with Isopropyl Alcohol. Then work the lubricant in as much as possible. I never knew about the motorcycle cable lubricants. That looks like a good option.
