Lifter anatomy....pushrod cup newer vs old

I'll try to make this short. Trying to find the right pushrod length...thought I had it. Then I looked at some newer lifters I had laying around and I see a difference in the depth at which the pushrod cup lays in the lifter. OLD LIFTER: Pushrod cup just lays in the plunger, you can pull it...

    Pushrod length 6.85 or 6.90?

Used the adjustable PR checker from Comp with the checker spring and came up with a 6.850" giving a good center valve line. I understand you add .030 to account for preload, making the pushrod length I need of 6.880" So...I'm pretty sure if I purchase the 6.900 length I should be OK...

    Valve tip rocker pattern..input?

Since I'm a little closer to the intake side do I go shorter or longer on the pushrod. Just want to double check, I know you said longer, but I've read opposite in the archives. Just want to get a picture in my head on the geometry. Thanks...I appreciate it.

Correct, stud mount.... Very mild Crane cam 260 duration, .456 lift...non-roller block. Lost my calipers....can't give measurement of the sweep, Contact area looks center to mildy on the intake side. Sweep looks wide to you?

    Pushrod length checker, add .030?

Read a ton in the archives....but no really clear answer. Once you convert your hydraulic lifter to solid with internal washers and you have the pushrod length checker at "zero lash" on the motor. do you add .030 to this length to take into account the preload you are going to need? I say...

Screwed up, used Scotch Brite..now what?

That's what I plan to do ... I used light pressure on the aluminum, still have slight swirl marks. Does it need to be milled cause of this? It's not like I can catch a fingernail when I go over the surface.

Screwed up, used Scotch Brite..now what?

Now I read the threads.... Used Scotch Brite on the block deck surface to clean off the old gaskets, also on the aluminum intake. Have read of horror stories about bearing failures.....I cleaned and vacuumed the pistons/cylinders and the oil valley. What else can I do? As far as the...

    Quietest roller rocker out there?

Upgrading to AFR heads, have read a lot about the noise they can make. Anyone recommend a roller rocker that keeps the noise down to the minimum? These will be stud mount with 1.6....1.7 maybe if the feedback on the noise isn't bad. Thanks, Drew

AFR 165 heads on older shortblock

Thinking about installing a set of AFR's on a 302 shortblock rebuilt back in the 1980's. Will this cause any problems? Car is running well, no oil consumption, putting out about 230hp right now with the old 4v heads. Probably about 20,000 miles since the rebuild.

    Pdestal mount newbie...E7's on 68 302

Thanks guys!! I'll stick with the pedestals since I have a set of nice new Crane roller rockers that came with the heads. I understand the concept of the preload with the turns now....The "longer pushrod needed with the less than 1/4 turn" threw me off, but I get it now. Drew
