    My brother is putting a 460 in his '87 this summer. The only things you really need are the 460 engine mounts for the fox which are available in Summit and a transmission. More than likely you need to do something with the front suspension to handle the extra weight.

    lowered springs caused alignment problems

    I'm thinking it's pretty normal for them to be a bit out of whack. I put in the Ford Racing C Springs and I have pretty much the same condition. Supposedly installing the Camber/Caster plates and having an alignment done will fix it right up.

    Trick Flow h/c/i installed, now idle problems

    I've had my H/C/I since May and my computer hasn't learned how to idle right 100% of the time either. Sometimes it's ok and others it's real bouncy. I hear getting a custom chip is about the only way to help remedy this.

    octane, timing, or the gingerbread man?

    Hmm... I'm not the whiz in this are but I think you had detonation/pinging because of what your timing was set at using the lower octane fuel which is easier to detonate, the 91 octane resists detonation a lot better.
