    Are the springs too tall or the tires too small?

    255/40/17's are a bit shorter than stock diameter. Hard to notice, but they are. If your car is low enough, it doesn't matter. I wish there was a 265 that had the correct diamter for 17 in rims. That would be perfect.

    How about 5 of us buy the tool and then spend $15 to ship to the next person. Whoever keeps it in the end spends the most. Don't do it without a tool, but keep in mind that a tool job might not be perfect either. It is kind of a risk either way.
