Used heads... how to tell if stem seals/retainers/valve locks/etc are okay?

If you trust your machine shop, have them inspect the heads.

    Recommendations for jumpy suspension?

X2 on the need for more pos. caster. An adj. strut rod would help here. Try one thing at a time, even though it will take longer, overall (maybe), to get things done. You're likely to find that you won't need to replace as much as you think. Tires, adj. strut rod, and new alignment may do it...

    My $2000 Ignition - I need help!

Your initial idea of turning the crank over until you have TDC on the damper and then seeing where the rotor is pointing in the dizzy should be adequate to know if you are 180 out, or not. On a fresh build, that might not be the case, but since you do not report messing with the short block...

Intake manifold rear crossover / Head gasket question

A rear cross-over helps to cool the heads, but also warms the intake. Warming the intake warms the air/fuel charge. Pick your poison. I installed a crossover on my Weber manifold at the urging of several people who said it would definitely help cooling. On a Weber intake, that can be done in a...

    Recommend me a camshaft

Yes, the wider the LSA, the less overlap and more dynamic compression. Don't get me wrong, overlap can be a good thing for cylinder filling, it just requires more static compression in order to produce good dynamic compression.

    global west leaf springs

Then I wonder how the grab-a-trac can be 165? I like the GW springs. I have no wheel hop and I test it often :-) It also holds down body roll (with del-alum bushings) nicely without a sway bar. Maybe someone with the 4-leaf grab-a-trac can give you their experience.

    Recommend me a camshaft

LSA: Not one that I know. Of course, you know that the smaller the LSA, the more overlap you will have. Low compression and too much overlap don't mix well. You had two cams listed and both have 110 degrees of overlap, which is a good number for a 351. The smaller cam will just make better...

    Recommend me a camshaft

If you shave the heads for more compression, then use the bigger of the two cams. If you keep compression down around 9:1, you can't go very big with 110 LSA. Use the smaller one.

    global west leaf springs

Call GW. Their 5-leaf is really pretty stiff - stiffer than the GT 5-leaf I had originally. They are de-arched 1", but I still use a 1" lowering block with them.

What do you guys think of my engine bay?

Semi-gloss and semi-flat are way different. Original paint was very close to today's semi-flat. The glossier paints are fine, though. Personally, I like semi-flat. I've never been a fan of mixed theme valve covers and air cleaner top. I dig the M/T valve covers, but how about a K&N filter and...

    Fresh Engine Start Woes.... GRRRR!

Yeah, get the dizzy in right, then (if it is) add advance. If you have a remote starter, then try adding it while cranking.

    Serious street/strip enginebuilder CA?

I build my own engines, but I use Dugans Racing Engines in Riverside, CA for machine work and setting up the heads. Dugans has a long history in racing engines in drag boats and, more recently, SCORE trucks. They charge $400 to build a short block (over and above parts and machining costs) and...

    oil pressure?

Well, your lifters are pumped up by oil pressure and will tap if pressure falls below what is required to keep them pumped. So, this would point to a real low-oil pressure situation. At least, it is plausible and you should not ignore the possibility of some sort of fault in the oiling system -...

    Hydraulic Roller Lifter Kit

A reduced base circle cam is just that - reduced diameter of the cam core. This weakens the cam and allows it to flex, especially as RPMs climb and more stress is placed on the cam. That's not a big deal if you choose a tame grind and don't plan to wind up the motor. Personally, I know it's dang...

    Hydraulic Roller Lifter Kit

D.Hearne is right. If you decide to do it anyway (i.e., despite cost), then get the Crane roller lifters so that you can use a std base circle cam - it's stronger and you have better choices in profiles.

How useful are these supporting-role engine components?

69Gmachine was trying to tell you tht it is likely that your (presumably) old balancer elastomer ring has slipped and is causing the vibration. That's a pretty good guess. A windage tray keeps the oil in the pan away from the crank. Often, the crank counterweights rotate into the oil, causing...

Rear susp. Much talk no facts?

First, it is difficult to get one suspension that will work well on the strip and road course. I use the TCP front with double adjustable shocks, but still (with loose settings and front sway bar disconnected) not a good drag setup. You need to let the front rise up for drag racing, but that's...

    1970 Mustang Stroker Engine Help

You didn't say you were on low budget, so: Crane optic dizzy - has all the curves built in. Jacobs 2000 ignition and coil - these will spark with under 6V of battery juice. Why is that good? If your alternator takes a dump, you can run on the battery quite a bit longer. Been there, done that and...
