my oil pressure has been kinda on the low side since i bought my car but today for some reason it was lower than usual and under acceleration sometimes it even fell slightly below the normal line...is it the pressure switch or just the guage malfunctioning? oil level is good and everything like that and i've had a slight valve tap but it seems a little louder today. any ideas?

Well, your lifters are pumped up by oil pressure and will tap if pressure falls below what is required to keep them pumped. So, this would point to a real low-oil pressure situation. At least, it is plausible and you should not ignore the possibility of some sort of fault in the oiling system - bad oil pump, for example. Perhaps a mechanic can remove your electric oil sensor and temporarily replace it with a mechanical gauge and see what it reads. That would eliminate the in-dash gauge and sending unit.

How about a more simple solution to the problem ? Your oil is thick and dirty and hasn't been changed and maybe you have a small oil leek as well. Check your oil level on the dipstick. You may need an oil change.

well i figured out the problem..i assumed that my oil level was good since i changed the oil a little over a month ago but i checked it and there was barely any on the dipstick..i saw some oil by the water pump so i'm assuming i have a tming cover leak? i did the oil change a week after i got it and im sure the car was sitting for a while before i bought it..o well if it is the timing cover i'll put a cam in there while i have it all apart anyway..at least some good will come of it
