    New to Classic Mustangs

6 posts have suggested the carb is the problem. The above indicates you have eliminated other problems, and the black and sooty plugs say you're running rich. Rebuild the carb. Kit ~ $20 How to: http://www.advanceautoparts.com/english/youcan/html/pht/pht20020301cr.html Just take your time...

    Getting new gears, some questions

I hear ya on that one. I put a lot of thought into much smaller purchases. You are getting good advice here. :SNSign: I do not have a limited slip and do not really miss it. I saw one article where there was a before and after test of a limited slip install of a modestly modified mustang. The...

    Tranny is toast

To me it depends on the first gear of the T5 that you get. According to this chart: http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/09/t5swap/index2.shtml the T5 for V8 have either a 3.35 or 2.95 first gear. If you multiply the rear end ratio by the first gear ratio you get the overall torque...

Anyone want my Holley 4160 carb.

This may open a can of worms but the tech content is: Holley 4160 part number 0-3310 has 750 CFM >>>> for a 289! The 4160 with 465 cfm (part number 0-1848-1) is Holley's carb for the small block Ford! This is straight from the Holley catalog...

    I've got paint

I thought that color was called "arrest me red". I know a lot of people have red and I think it is for only one reason - great color for a mustang! It looks like your painter did a great job of color sanding to remove orange peel, either that or he is one heck of a paint shooter! Nice Job - get...

    Motor vibration at 3,000 RPM's

Hmm. That should be designed to allow some rotation of the engine as it builds torque. If not it could be a source for some of the vibration! I bet if your engine mounts are allowing that much rotation they are toast!

    Tranny is toast

Nuf said - do the swap. Of course once you have the overdrive, you'll "need" to change gears in the rear end!

    Best suspension upgrade

I didn't mean to imply that the kits have "bad stuff", but if you piece together your suspension you can do better. I have no issues with Moog parts! An example of what I meant is the poly strut rod bushings in the MP kit should not be used, as others have mentioned. Rubber bushings are better...

    Tranny is toast

With that nitrous kit you will need the extra torque capacity of the 90-94 Mustang T5, and even that may not be enough. There are upgrade kits for the T5 that you should consider and even that may not be enough. You will also need a flywheel, the automatic flexplate currently in there will...

    Best suspension upgrade

The kits from mustang places make a great list of things that can be done and parts needed. I would take the list to an autoparts store or shop on line with a general parts store. I'll bet you can piece together a system that's better quality and more economical than the kits. - Agree that...

    Cowls,@#*^#spot welds,and seam sealer?

You want to use a special primer in the areas that will get welded. Here is an example http://www.levineautoparts.com/upwelprimaer.html I'm not recommending this brand, I just pulled it off the internet to give you an example.

    New to Classic Mustangs

The T5 is great in an old mustang. I have the z-bar set up, but if it didn't come that way I would have strongly considered goint with a cable release. There is a good article on the swap at http://www.mustangsteve.com/msFAQtransmission.html Hint click on need parts, the guy that runs the...

SeaFoam is good stuff. There may be some "varnish" that can be clean out so it's worth a shot. With carbs there are alot of internal things that can cause problems. IIRC the stock 2V carb was the 2150, introduced in 1957 and used forever. I've read there were more than 200 Ford versions of this...

    New to Classic Mustangs

From your first post I didn't get a feel for your experience level. I apologize for any unnecessary schooling. With EFI the mysteries of performance occur with electrons. With carbs, the mystery occurs between the air filter and intake manifold. Static reving doesn't take the same fuel flow as...

    New to Classic Mustangs

That sounds like a carb problem, but there could be ignition issues. Could also be vacuum related. The 4V and headers will make a noticeable improvement, but these will start you down the path to the dark side of "more power". Engines are a case where the whole is greater than the sum of...

What to seal head gaskets with?

And remember, all head gaskets must be installed with the front stamp on the gasket toward the front of the engine. Most of the time, this means one gasket will look "upside down" compared to the other gasket. That's just the way it is, front means front! Otherwise, you will block a water passage.

I'm a strong believer in getting what you have working right before "up grading". Things you may have done but I didn't see on your list: timing distrubutor cap spark plugs spark plug and coil wires check for vacuum leaks rebuild carb compression test transmission/clutch slippage With...
