01 GT auto tranny in a 97 GT?

I found a pretty good deal for a 01 gt motor with automatic trans. my car is 97 gt auto. is it the same? or would i have to change computers? or are they just different? thanks

if its a late model 01 trans its different (its a tremic). To use the new tranny you'll need to swap drive shaft, cross member, and a few other things. New trans would be better because the trans in 96-early 01 suck. If its an early model it the same or should be. good luck

He is speaking about Automatics.


The 4R70W should bolt into the '97 no problem. You may need the driveshaft however. I am sure someone else can chime in with specifics.

Oh four six, all Mustangs manual trans are Tremecs. Since they bought out Borg-warner, you could say they have been tremecs since 1984

DO NOT just swap over transmissions. The new( 01 ) transmission is better( updated parts ) than your 97. They are not direct swaps though. You will need to re-pin the new transmission and re-use your VSS and TCC sensors. There is more, I just can not think of it all right now. Go to Modular Depot or TCCOA and all you need to know is posted on those sites.
