In order to remove and replace the rear wheel bearing, do I need some special tools? How do I get the bearings out? It's all taken apart, new bearing ready to be installed, but I can't figure out how to remove the old ones?
Remove rear cover of diff, obviously use a catch pan for all the fluid. Great time to add good fluid obviously.
While that draining, remove wheels, brakes and mounting brackets from each side.
Remove cross pin (8mm I think)
push axles in so c clips can be reached, use needle nose pliars (unless you have long skinny fingers) to pull both clips out. Remove axles by carefully sliding them out of the housing.
Once axles are out, use a slid hammer with the rear bearing attachment (can rent from most any parts stores) pop out bearing and seals, real easy job with slide hammer.
Clean the insde of the bearing house, slide new bears and seals in, use a large socket or something equivilant to evenly tap the bearing and seal into the housing.
re install axles very very carefully not to rip the seal or nick a bearing (might want to wipe axle down first to ensure its clean.
Clean gasket off of the rear cover and housing. Use high temp ulta black silcone to make a new gasket (don't even think about using a paper gasket b/c it will most likely leak).
Clean the housing real good, get all old junk fluid out and all mess from cleaning gasket/silicone off.
Install c clips and cross pin opposite of how it was taken apart. by now you should of put the silicone on the cover and are ready to bolt it up. Torque to factory specs.
Install brakes and wheels.... Fill rear end.
Take for a drive and enjoy. when you pull out of the shop, cleanup any spills of fluid you might of made. (enjoy the smell of that friction modifier).
After test drive park back on a clean part of concrete to check for possible leaks.
You can pick up a slide hammer free from Autozone (just have to leave a deposit).
Good write up above but if you have antilock brakes make sure you remove the speed sensors (reverse Tork bit...forgot which size) or you will never get the axle to push in far enought to remove the C-clips. Also invest in a Haynes or Chiltons manual. Invaluable when doing it yourself.
