I have a 78 King Cobra I bought from the original owner. The car has had a repaint, but never wrecked. The buck tag matches the Vin. Car is dark Blue, no t-tops, gold accents original blue design on spoiler which is kind of odd. My question is. All the KCs were supposedly built in December, this car clearly wasn't. Any insight as to why this car was 2 months early? It does have a lower vin and KC on the buck tag.

Thanks FRED

I'd never heard about all of the Kings being built in the same month (even seems unlikely given the production numbers). I'd help with some research on it, but MustangII.net is down (again, seems to be the case pretty often these days), and MustangII.org doesn't have those kinds of details.

I just bought a King this weekend. KC's were not all built in Dec, the KC package is basically stickers and a few extra bolt-ons added to a 2+2. T-top cars were sent out to ASC for modification and returned to Ford. KC's are not coded out on VIN's either, the buck tag identifies it. My production number is- 11463

I've read it several places over the years, one was in Hemmings Motor News and several other mustang sites over the years. What was the build date on yours Stad? I'd like more info to see the truth to it or debunk the other info out there. I know they were nothing really special other then a sticker package.

from Hemmings- Another way to verify that you are looking at a legitimate King Cobra is to find out the car's build date. Production of these cars started in the first week of December 1977 and ended in July 1978.

I'll check my build date when I get home.

I knew I wasn't crazy, but I had read it elsewhere too. Glad someone else found the same info. Anyone that would have the accurate info guys? I doubt Kevin Marti would, as these weren't Vin specific.

That's consistent with them being built December of 77 and later!! Beautiful car by the way.

What does the buck tag reveal? If it has a KC somewhere on it, it is the real deal. If it doesn't, then it is a fake.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
