Went to a friends house yesterday to check the timing. We where going to advance it to 14-16 but found that it was already at 18!. I havnt been pinging or anything so we left it there. Should we retard it back to around 14?

Could it be releated to backfiring? THe stangs been doing that, but not as much as before. Im doing a tuneup but Im waiting for the tune-up kit to arive (perf. Distributors).

I'm no pro, but I'd say retard the timing and see where it gets you. I've always heard 14* is good. Good Luck.

i am no pro either, but......make sure your balancer has not slipped and that the spout is out (always worth mentioning, even though im sure you did it).
some cars like more timing, some ping at 10*. if you are not detonating, i would not sweat it.

i checked mine the other day and it was more than 30* btdc,....the pointer was right at about the part number after the "BTC"on the balancer,.... i know it wouldn't be running at this so i figure the balancer must have slipped as said in the previous reply,.... how does it slip and how can i fix it?

Only way I know of to fix a slipped balancer is to replace it

I recently replaced my balancer about 7 months ago. Its an OEM Ford balancer. How long do they last? Ive checked the rubber insert, and its alinged just fine, so I assume its ok.

Is your GT aod or 5 speed? I heard a rumor that the aod computers can handle more advance. Just wondering, Im running about 15-16 no probs so far, and I have an AOD computer myself.

the balancer is basically two pieces of circular iron (stock). one fits inside the other and they are held together by an elastomer (rubber insert). when the glue or laminate on the elastomer breaks lose, the two pieces can rotate independant of one another. the balancer is located via the keyway on the crank, and referenced via the timing marks (inside and outside ring, respectively). so when it slips, it is out of phase, and a symptom is timing way out of whack and/or horrible vibration. it is not good at all for the motor to have the balancer rotating out of phase, as it is no longer balanced.

Blk92stangg, i heard the same thing. i think Mike (Mustang 5L5) is the one who just said it in the past day or two, though i could be wrong. there was a computer thread in here recently.
i thought that the AOD puter did not necessarily allow more timing, but rather did not CUT timing while shifting. i could very well be wrong. LOL. good info.
