i think the 85 is externally regualted and the 86 is internal. If this is the case when I installed a 3G in to my 82 Capri I took the harness from the car I got the altanator from and color matched all the wires. You will see the external regulator has the same wires with the same makrings. Mine works but I was careful an used wiring diagrams from my 93 and 82 and matched them.
