1992 Mustang GT Flywheel

I bought a new clutch kit and a new flywheel (50oz steel). I installed them, put everything back together and something is out of balance. I took everything back apart and everything is still good, nothing visually wrong. I asked a mechanic which didn't know much about Fords but he told me that if the mustang is externally balanced that the flywheel would have to go back a certain way. It looks to me that the bolt pattern on it will go on any way. Is there a certain way that this has to go back on? And if so does anyone know how?

Yes, it has to go on one way. Usually the direction that the center is indented is the way it goes on. That way, the flywheel is mounted spaced away from the engine.

I know that it goes on with the indented side in. I was talking about the bolt pattern. Does it only bolt on one way. All six bolts look evenly spaced and it looks like it would bolt on any way that you turn it. I put it on and all bolts went on, tightened down all the way around and everything looks good but after putting everything back together there is a vibration, a noise that makes me think it's out of balance. That's why i wanted to know if it went on a certain way, not a front and back issue but a bolt pattern issue.

what is manufacturer and part number of the flywheel u got? When i put my flywheel on the holes are not evenly spaced. You could only put it on one way

does it vibrate while driving??

if so, you're vibration is more than likely coming from the driveshaft. taking it off, then putting it back on in a different position will cause vibrations.

No, it does it while driving in every gear between 3-4 thousand rpms. I thought it was transmission. But it does it while idling, with the clutch pushed in and the input shaft not turning. So what else could it be if it still does it and nothing from the transmission back is turning. It's a small vibration and a noise at 3 and 4 thousand rpms. I had a mechanic look at it and he said it's not in my transmission that something was out of balance. The flywheel or the pressure plate if he had to guess. I took everything back out and took them both to him and he couldn't find anything wrong other than the flywheel has a counter balance which is made on it but all the bolts on the flywheel and on the the end of the crankshaft are all evenly spaced? It has to go on a certain way for the balance on the flywheel to work properly. But yes, it will bolt on any way you turn it. And I can't figure out what to do????????

Do the holes from you old flywheel line up just like the new one? What are the part numbers of the new parts installed??

Yes they do. And I'm not at home right now to give you the part numbers. But how would that help. Is there some place you can look it up to tell if they are evenly spaced?

What clutch and flywheel did u get? Or are they parts store replacements?

The Clutch kit was a Ford Racing "King Cobra". The flywheel was a factory replacement.

Now that I am thinking of it, the holes on the flywheel are evenly spaced. It's the holes on the crank that aren't. I believe there are more holes on the crankshaft than that of the flywheel..thus allowing you to only mount the flywheel one way. I assume you didn't have the problem before thus making your issue be the clutch or flywheel. Now determining which one may be a pain unless you have another clutch or flywheel to swap out. Unless the part numbers are incorrect for your new parts.

I see what your saying. The crankshaft does have 7 holes instead of 6. But which way do point the counter weight?

You don't point the counter weight any way. When you line the holes of the flywheel up with that of the crankshaft (again only one way) that's it.

Is this a stock motor?

Yes this is a stock motor but the six holes are evenly spaced and you can turn it any way and bolt it down but the counter weight placement has to be right.

The flyweel is "keyed" to be installed in only one way. It is not clockable.

The distance center to center of these two holes is different.

It could however, have been manufactured out of balance. So could your clutch and pressure plate for that matter.

You did not mention (or I've missed it) if this is a stock motor that's not been rebuilt of rebalanced to either zero or 28 oz. Take a good look at the old flywheel and ensure that it's a 157 tooth 50oz imbalanced flywheel. Also take a good look at the harmonic balancer and ensure that's it's not shifted or distorted. Call around to some shops in your area and see if there is anyone that is able to check the balance of your flywheel and clutch as an assembly.
