Checked out a 1998 mustang gt today, thinking about buying it and I was just wondering, what rpm should a automatic nonpi 4.6 should shift at? When I was test driving the car going into 3rd gear while getting on the freeway it shifted in the mid 5k range at full throttle. That seemed a little high to me, like maybe it was slipping, but I had a 94 5.0 which stock I thought optimal shifting was in the high 4k range, so I could be wrong.

Depends. Did you floor the pedal from a roll, does the car have gears, were the shift points corrected for the gears, does the car have a tune.
I have a '98 and from a dead stop it shifts around mid 5K. From a roll it may shift a little earlier, not quite sure quite sure on that ... may be low 5's.
My car has gears, the j-mod, a tune, and i have it set to shift around 5.5k at WOT. Trying to think back when it was stock and it may still have shifted late.
Not much help ... hopefully someone else will chime in.

my 96 shifted at 5500...this is a 4.6, not a 5.0.

Although a stock 98 may not be making any power that high...sounds right to me.
