2.3 Driveshaft

My car had a cheap aftermarket driveshaft on it when I bought it... zirc fittings in the u-joints... u-joint seals bad so it slings grease all over the place... huge balancing collar around the slip yoke... grooved yoke surface so doesn't seal in back of tranny... etc. So I went to the boneyard to find a replacement factory shaft and got one out of a 90 - 93 2.3 car with an A4LD.

Well I get home and go to put it in and lo and behold, the shaft I got is a good several inches shorter than the shaft on my car, and the diameter of the slip yoke is smaller than mine. My car has a T-5... did Ford use different drive shafts on automatic cars and stick cars?

A4LD had a different driveshaft. the T5 cars I believe can use the v8 shafts as well as the aftermarket aluminum shafts. So check your local mustang boards or on here and someone will practically give away a stock shaft. Or pay for the aluminum one.

So to my knowledge V8 auto and stick and 2.3 t5 = same driveshaft

You didn't have a "cheap aftermarket driveshaft" on your car, that was the original one.

Instead of a whole new driveshaft, why not replace the U-joints and put on a new yoke?

V8 drive shafts fit fine, I have an FMS aluminum drive shaft on my car and its fantastic, Car seems to have better acceleration due to the lighter shaft, and it also has a lot less vibration.

Thanks 89stang, that's what I was starting to suspect. Just my luck there weren't any T-5 cars in the junkyard the day I went.

Original shaft maybe, not original u-joints and yoke with the zirc fittings and huge balancer/damper ring. A whole shaft at the pull-a-part was less than new u-joints and yoke.

The name of the game with my 2.3 is CHEAP so I'm not gonna spring for an aluminum shaft for it, but I might put an aluminum shaft on my 5.0 and put its factory shaft on the 2.3. Good to know for sure that it fits though... thanks!

The problem with putting on an entire new driveshaft is that there's a chance you might have to get it balanced. There's a reason you have to make an index mark on the shaft and axle when you pull the driveshaft out of your car.

I've never marked a driveshaft on my 2.3 or my 5.0/408w cars.
The shaft has been pulled more times than I care to count. Not once have I finished the job and heard/felt any vibrational changes.

Maybe I'm just lucky though?


Glad this thread came up... I wasn't sure if the v8 shaft was going to fit in my 2.3 t5 car....
