I have an 89 LX that I had in storage for the last few years. I noticed yesterday after I started it up there was a coolant leak between the head and block on the exhaust manifold side of the engine.
Was there an issue with head gaskets on these motors? Is the head gasket a layered steel one? Thanks

These motors don't typically blow head gaskets unless you are running lots of boost or nitrous and get a bit of detonation. Even then, I've never heard of only leaking out of the engine without issues while running. Normally, with a blown headgasket, they will drink coolant and mix fluids.
You may want to take a closer look. There are freeze plugs on that side of the block and it's very possible you are leaking from there.
