Try 23 hours! I gave my daughter our old Avalon when she was a senior in college; a car I bought new and kept in perfect shape. Gave it to her at 1:00 PM on a Sunday, Monday at 11:45 AM, just before I was presenting to a client, I got a call that she's "been in an accident; well actually her boyfriend was driving." They rear ended a Jeep IN A PARKING LOT. They did $6k in damage and the car was totaled by the insurance company. I always expect they will get in an accident; I just hope no one is hurt, as was the case here.

I'm glad no one was hurt. It's a good thing there wasn't a passenger. But on the other hand...

It doesn't look too bad. A little Bondo and a can of touch up paint should fix it.

When my daughter had her learner's permit I handled her learning a little differently. It was the winter and there was some snow around so we headed up to the high school for a little winter driving instructions. We had a good time doing doughnuts in the parking lot and she learned a lot about getting control over an out of control vehicle. Being an 81 Camaro there were no vehicle "enhancements" to help her out.

We spent a lot of time driving together and even did a little aggressive driving around some turns and stuff. She's had her license for almost 10 years now and not even a fender bender has happened.

I never had to do this type of stuff with my son. I noticed from a young age that he was kind of anal about doing things "by the book". To this day I can't even get him to cut across parking spaces in a parking lot. Nope, he has to drive to the end and go by all of the rules.

Heres what kills me. If hed listen to me hed been driving his car instead of mine. His has no tags or ins yet. I told him how much he would need for his tags, and title fees. He had the money sitting in his bank account for 2 weeks. I start getting ready to insure his car... whats he do? He pisses every dime away. EVERY damn dime. So he needed mine to get to work. I wouldnt have let him drive it, but going to pick his ass up 11 every night was old. Now Im going to have front the cash for tags, and **** so he can drive his sorry behind to work. I swear I have to hold his hand for everything. Hes too much like momma... dense. God I love the boy, but I was never this slack about anything.

My mother and sisted are idiots. My mother who never bought me anything in my life, seriously... my father bought all my toys and grandparent always bought my clothes and such. Well when they divorced I went with dad and my kid sister stayed with mom. At 16 I had been saving for two years and bought my first car, a 84.5 GT350 Hatch. I loved it and took care of it.
My sister was given a couple year old BMW 325i which she totaled in a week. My mother then replaced it with a 325i vert, which was totaled two weeks latter. She was then given a 535i sport. Took a month for her to total that. I hear about this and am just shocked that mom kept buying her new BMWs. Well the after the last one my sister was given a Ford Festiva, which she wrecked and got a broken leg. So my mothers mother (I hate that grandparent) bought my sister a 635CSi coupe to replace it.... whaich then got totaled three months latter I was 23 by this time and on my 8th car but none were wrecked, I just got bored after fixin them up and bought sold them for a new project. I have totaled two cars in my life but both times it was the other persons fault, both times it was from someone hitting me cause they darted out in traffic.

Good lord. IF I was her mother I wouldnt have replaced one BMW with a second one. Heck I might have taken her license after the second wreck.

He has no reason to be scared of me right now. I took it with stride. I had the car up for sale anyway. In a round about way he sold it for me. Only my insurance company will be buying it. The only thing thats bad is the timing. He could have waited until his car was ready so we wouldnt have to rush.

The excuse for the accident = BS. This was just driver inexperience, plain and simple. He drove 'away' from the oncoming car, instead of holding his ground, maintaining his lane. That is my best educated guess, and I do this for a living.

This is why my future offspring will start out driving a POS 4-door sedan with airbags and ABS. No way are they getting any sort of fancy car and their first cars.

Granted, i was lucky. I owned my '88 5.0 when I was 16 and still have it at 27 years old. Oh man the stories that car could tell of my youth growing up

Luckily i made it through ok. I was a wild driver, but i didn't do stupid things...ok i didn't do VERY stupid things.

But yeah...my kids....they are getting 10-year old Focus's or whatever is kicking around in 20 years
