I have a 2000 GT that just started randomly loosing power. The car is stock except for a pair of mufflers, cold air intake, and a canned BAMA tune mainly for speedo correction for the 4.10 gears. The tune has been the same for years and nothing has been done to the car recently which might help with a place to start.

The situation usually happens when the engine is cold. When it acts up, it will start and pull away fine. Then it will go into a kind of limp mode. The exhaust note sounds similar to when traction control kicks in but that is not what is happening. When this starts happening, power is completely reduced and there is next to no pedal response. The engine does not cut off and will idle in this state, though it has a definite miss feel to it.. This normally happens when the engine is cold but once did it to me after about 10 miles of driving.

There is no check engine light on nor are there any trouble codes in the ECM.

I threw a set of coils at it thinking this was the obvious first step. It initially had the same symptoms so I put it back in the garage. However, I drove it all last week and there were no issues. This morning, I tried to take it to work and it started acting up right out of the gate. The loss of power thing came and went as I took the car back home.

Anyone run into this before? It feels ignition related to me with how acutely the symptoms come and go. I hate firing a parts cannon at things but without any codes for guidance, I'm not sure where to start.

Thanks for any and all help.

Any aftermarket (non ford) sensors? Cam/Crank etc? Are they excessively dirty? What you describe sounds ignition related as well - might start with the obvious of grounds for the injector and COP harnesses. Plugs in good shape? Any of them extra dirty compared to the rest?

Sorry for the late response. I have been out of town.

All sensors are factory aside from mabey O2 sensors I put in 8 years ago. All wiring and connectors are in great shape. None of the sensors are covered in dirt/oil if that's what you mean. All ground wires I saw are tight and free of damage.

Can you data log with your tuner? Look for loss of values in the obvious places like cam/crank.

I tried to data log with the scanner with no luck. Either it really can't do that or I don't know what I sm doing. It was only showing me a few things like baro pressure, injector duty cycle, rpm, etc. Nothing about timing or what the crank/cam sensors were doing.

I will research this point further.
