Yes. assuming:
  • That the manual is in good working condition. IE it's producing the rated HP.
  • That the driver of the manual transmission is competent.
  • That the automatic is stock.
Why?
  • the manual is lighter
  • there is less parasitic loss due due to automatic pumping requirements
  • There aren't any losses through the torque converter. No slip with a manual clutch.
 
Btw, when I started racing my 5 speed at the 1/4 mile track I would miss shifts on the (limp wristed) stock shifter because of all the adrenaline I was experiencing. I swapped it out to an MGW short throw shifter. Made all the difference in the world.
