my 2002 conv. top will go down w/o any problems, but really strains to
go back up. motor seems to work OK, could it be low on some kind of fluid,
and if so, what kind, and how & were do I add some. any info would be a
great help.

there is a rubber plug on the end of the motor maybe 3/4 inch wide. Dexron ATF if I recall but double check it. Doubt its a fluid issue because for that, the fluid would need to leak and that would be the source of your issue. The hydraulics can sometimes start to go as the seals wear out. One side seem a little slower than the other? That doesnt guarantee anything of course.
