2002 Gt No Start - Fuel Related

Hey guys, I am confuddled about an issue I just started having. Basically, I parked my GT about 2 weeks ago. Fuel level was low but not quite on E. Well, I went to start it today and it wouldn't start. It turns over fine but it won't start. I went to the gas station and got some 93 to add just in case it had gotten too low, brought it up to 1/4 of a tank, still no start. So I began looking around. I pressed in on the schrader valve to see if any fuel would come out and got none. I pressed on it again as my wife turned it over and WAH LA... it started. It ran pretty decently until I went to give it gas which then it sputtered and when I hit it a bit more it stalled and will only start when I hold the schrader valve in as it's being cranked. It will idle and I even got it backed up to my concrete pad. No CEL's at all. Any ideas? Maybe fuel pressure regulator? I'm stumped as to why it won't start without the schrader valve being pushed in. Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like your fuel pump is maybe going out

It is likely the fuel pump. The fuel pump on my GT quit in a very similar fashion. I drove it about 200 miles the previous day, parked it over night and the next day was a no start with no fuel pressure. In my case, it turned out to be one of the least enjoyable maintenance experiences. I was in an unfamiliar town, with no tools of my own and found this out at noon, on a 107F day.

Other potential problems include the CCRM or fuel pump relay, depending on what year your mustang is. However I am betting on the fuel pump.

Yeah, that's what I was hoping it wasn't lol... I laid under the car and tried to listen as my wife keyed it on a little bit ago. I didn't hear the pump coming on.

Something similar happened to me with a starter on a VW man lol.. A day I will never forget. Luckily my buddy had a Dodge and could bring me some tools to get it fixed with.

It's a 2002. I'm wondering how come it's starting when I hold the schrader valve in though, and why it's idling. Maybe my fuel pump is just going out and is weak? I don't hear the whine like the pump is kicking on though.

A little update. Checked the intertia switch and it's not tripped. Also, listened up front to around the CCRM and heard the relay clicking as it was being turned to the on position. So, I'm going with the fuel pump. I'll let you guys know if that was the issue.

It's the fuel pump, happened to me, I ran my baby down to about an eighth of a tank and it burned up the pump almost instancely. Wont do that again.

Yeah, I've never let it get that low on fuel, but I was in a rush to get home and it was a Friday. I guess it was one of those D'oh moments where you regret it later. I checked the power to the inertia switch too, and I got power going there, so I'm pretty confident it's the fuel pump. Well, I hope it's a little warm next weekend. lol

Do you have a fuel rail adaptor to test the fuel pressure at the rails with a gauge? That'll tell you for sure. I forget what the pressure should be while cranking, but you can find that easy enough.

I don't. I have no fuel coming out of the schrader valve when I push it down though. However, it does crank and run if I turn it over with the schrader valve pushed in. It runs terribly though and stalls when I give it gas.

Sounds like fuel pump. When they start to go bad they get dead spots and will work sometimes but not others. If you change it make sure to get the gasket that goes around the filler neck in to the gas tank it always rips and leaks like crazy.

Hey guys, update on the fuel issue. It was the fuel pump defenitely. I bought one made by Airtex. Just so everyone knows, it is an Airtex brand but the pump is made by Walbro. So far, so good. No issues.

Tips for anyone doing their fuel pump. Buy the filler neck to tank grommet as it will defenitely rip. Also, have a few buddies help as the tank is awkward and removing the fuel filler is aggravating. I had 2 guys helping me. Other than that, pretty straight forward except the glue holding the tank up was aggravating. Anyone have any questions, feel free to PM me.

The previous owner of my car said it is on it's 3rd pump

He now has an '03 Terminator and is having fuel problems with it too lol

Sounds like someone is running the wrong gas, running it too low or using REALLY cheap gas. Lol. I've replaced my fuel pump once, and it was original to the car.
