Does a collapsible steering shaft from a 2003 cobra fit our cars? If it does is it easy to install? I have lots of play in my steering wheel and will be getting an 03 cobra steering rack soon.

Could just be the joint...thats what mine was. For the life of me i cant remember which shaft i bought...brain dead with zero sleep. Wanna say it was the 03/04 shaft....not positive though.

Is it really worth it to swap to 03 cobra rack even if it might not be my rack thats causing the play?

I just did the shaft. You'll have to search here and the corral about the rack. Fairly easy to tell if it's the joint in the shaft...

I am using the 03/04 Cobra steering shaft. Get under the car and turn that thing by hand and see if there is play in it. Mine was terrible.

I will post the part number in a day or two, pretty sure the box is still in my shed.

I can twist it with my hand back and firth so I guess its the shaft right? I also heard of the bearing in the firewall I might as well change that to when I replace the shaft right? I saw bearing on 50resto for 40 bucks. Thanks guys hopefully it works ill keep you posted if its the fix because I know alot of people have this problem.

The shaft fits directly into the 94-98 cars. But it's the same shaft as the 94-98. I put an 03 in my 96 Cobra but only because Blue Oval was clearing them out for 19.95. lol. I ended up not needing it. The bearing in my firewall was bad. They go bad in a lot of the Mustangs I have had.

Anybody with play in their wheel...you needs this:

I just don't see how a new bearing will fix play in your steering wheel. If anything, bad bearing would make it harder to turn, thus having LESS play than before. While I'm sure our cars could all use a new column bearing by now, I don't believe it is what causes the play.

From my experiences, it's always been the rag joint that goes bad. I believe the 03/04 Cobra shafts eliminate that rag joint which is why they have less play.

Are we talkin about lateral play or rotational play? I read the first post as being rotational play.

You don't need to eliminate the rag joint to cure the play. Our cars were fine when new....the shafts age. 03/04 shafts are simply new shafts. It has a rag joint too

Anyone know where/P/N for the plastic bushing that fits over the steering shaft and goes into this bearing?

I don't think you can buy that by itself, i had to use the 99-up shaft when i did the AJE k-member, and the shaft came from 04 cobra, it's little longer then 94-98 shaft extended

Good luck
