I am a restoring. 64.5 Mustang Coupe with a 260 engine. The engine has all new internals and I fired it up last week and it sounds strong but will not idle. I have diagnosed it as a vacuum problem and removed the carb. The carb base gasket throttle bore holes are larger than the actual throttle bore of the carb and I am wondering if this is my problem. All sources list one gasket for all 2v Ford small blocks, and I am wondering if this is correct. I have attached a photo of the gasket. In all my rebuilds I have never had this problem, it this is my first 260.

Hmmm....Spacer could be warped causing a vacuum leak.

I have taken a piece of 80 grit paper and layed it on a very flat surface like a new piece of 1/4 plate steel and blocked both sides of a spacer. You will be able to tell if it is warped or not by the material it takes off. Some machine shops have a belt sander that they might could do this for you. AS far as the gasket goes, I searched and couldn't find one specific to the 260. One would think that it would be available and a separate part number. People on the early '60's Falcon and Fairlane sites might be of some help on this.

Govert, that is what I did yesterday, I found the ears were raised a little and I flat sand both sides of the plate. Seemed to make it a little better, but still not resolved. Good idea on the falcon site, Thnaks.

Govert is right on spacer warping also check bottom of carb for same
Gasket is probably ok, maybe find a thicker one.
Sometimes the spacer plate and carb bottom don't get along if mixed and matched.

maybe post pics of carb bottom and spacer both sides?
Where are you running the spacer hose too?
