289 header spark plug problem

installed my new set of flowtech headers today and they fit really good. But on the drivers side only the o.e spark plugs do not make it past the first two cylinders neither do the supplied bolts. this is because the header tubes make a sharp turn and do not allow clearance of both of these parts. so now what? no shorty plugs seem to be made same with bolts

the bolt issue isnt really a problem, you can get allen head bolts for the header from a number of sources. as for the plugs, try accel and see if they have a shorty plug that fits the ford head.

yeah i also had a set of allen head round bolts and there still too long in order to be able to get them straight to get em started. Also i don't see an 18mm thread spark plug from accell to fit these.

you might try leaving the header loose when trying to start the header bolts. or order a custom set of bolts from arp.

I recommend you call their tech support line, it sounds like you got a defective set.

They own Hooker too and I have never had a problem with those!

I've had several pairs of headers that required bolt installation in order. They are always a tight fit. Start on both ends to hold the header up. Then, try and get the inside ones started. You may only be able to get a partial turn on each bolt, before they start to fight you again. This is just a test of your commitment, don't give up so easy....

I had the same problem with headers on my windsor Jr heads. You have to leave the headers loose, possibly with studs at both ends, and shorty accells do exist, and are necessary, and the plugs get torqued before the header goes on tight. A very thin plug socket and wrench does the trick. I taped my wires with msd high heat tape, and extended the life of the boots a little.
those header gaskets with the loop hangers on the ends are great.

geez i would hope if i spent over 400 to a grand that none of these problems would exist. I guess you get what you pay for. btw, i got them installed yesterday exept one bolt. there is not room in there to finish tightening this one bolt before the wrench strips right off of it.
