My 96 gt grinds on occasion when I shift into 2nd at high RPM's. It doesn't do it unless I push it though. I've seen people say it's my synchro. Also when I'm fixing this issue could I fix the common issue where I grind shifting into reverse?

It does sounds like a synchro (common), also the reverse sounds like a hydraulic clutch problem(not sure if mustangs even have them). maybe even the clutch?

I don't think that it has a hydraulic clutch, but I guess I'm not positive. Also I have to shift up into 5th and straight down into reverse so it won't grind, if that helps at all.

thats typically the better thing to do since reverse doesnt have a sychro, and theres nothing to stop it from grinding

Darn, just figured I'd ask to see if that's something I could fix while I'll be poking around in my tranny.

i wouldnt recommend doing tranny work unless its something youve done before, and i had reverse pop out back in a 6speed i had. it turned out to be the fork

Oh I know, I won't be going at it alone or uneducated. I figure it won't be something I deal with until winter when I won't be driving it anyway.

good luck to you! my 2 cents is to buy a used part out tranny. Throw it in and rebuild the one you have just incase, and for the knowledge!

Not a bad idea. I've also heard getting an aftermarket shifter could solve my problem, so I guess I'll just do more research an go from there.

for grinding going into gear at high rpms, its not too big of a deal. but it could turn into one. if money was no object id get a used tranny, new clutch, and a short throw. but im sure you could find a good deal on some of that used under about 500-800

Alright thanks for the advice and that's what I'm afraid of is it escalating to something worse.
