3.73 Gear Change- Need Help

Hey All!
I did a FRPP 3.73 gear change about a month ago in my 96GT. I did not change anything with the speedometer for the first few days. I phoned a local mustang shop and they sent me the piece they said I needed for my transmission. It is a little gear that is to fit into the trasmission where the speedometer cable goes. I have looked all over the transmission and I cannot find where this goes! Do I need this part or is this only for the T5 tranny. I believe I have a T45. Do I have to have my speedometer changed through my computer? I am starting to rack up serious extra miles on my odometer. Any Ideas?

should be able to pull the speedo cable out of the trans, and put it on the end of the cable replacing the curent one, and reinstall it

If its a 5speed, you need a speed cal. wich sets the new speed for the gear.
If its an auto, you need to get it set in the computer or get a predator...

Yep, you need a speed cal or, if an auto, you'll need a handheld programmer or chip to have the shift points adjusted properly. The handheld programmer or chip will also fix a 5 spd speedo as well, but just a speed cal is all that is necessary. You cannot fix this with a new speedo gear...not on a 96.

OK, here comes a really stupid question but what is a speed cal and where can I get it? By the way it's a 5-speed. Thanks for the help.

many places sell them, umm, how about www.brothersperformance.com for one, search for speedcal (one word) - it's basically an electronic converter to correct the speedo.

wait!! as I understood it, on a 96-98 (or 99) manual tranny, a speedo gear was all that's neccesary, as there is an actual gear in the transmission, while the speedcal (like an "electronic" speedometer gear) is only neccessary for the newer. Check it out before you buy a speedcal. The hole for the gear should be found on the housing of the transmission, where a wiring harness comes off of it, take off the bolt, and it should be in there, I believe

NO calibration can be done electronically on a 96. All you need is the right Speedo gear! Once under the car it's like 3 minutes work.

I've been under the car about four times and I can't seem to find it. I found the drain plug and where the reverse lights are in but not where the speedo gear is. Do you know if it is on the driver's side or passenger side, front or back? top or bottom of bell housing? I must be blind. Thanks for the help guys!

Im not sure where its at man, but you DO NOT need to change it electronically!!! Thats only for 99+. As stated above all you need is a speedo gear. Sadly I am unsure where it is since mine is a 99+ lol sorry.

I assume you have this taken care of by now, but the cable goes into the side of the tailshaft on the drivers side.

The VSS should be at 11 o'clock on the "conical" section (tailshaft, as Riocobravert said) as you look at the transmission from the driver seat.

My car is living proof that a SpeedCal works on an automatic, lol. The pre-99's stick or auto can use a SpeedCal. The +99 stick cars can still use a SpeedCal. It's only the +99 autos that need a chip or reflash of the PCM to correct for gears.

I recently had my gears changed and still have not corrected the speedo, am i unknowingly racking up my odometer faster than i should be?

2001 GT Auto. I just received my X3, will be getting this fixed soon.

Dayum, that really sucks. Good thing is the car has been sitting in the garage for the last 2 weeks getting exhaust work done. Once I get that done (hopefully Friday) I will have to get the directions out on the X3 and see how to make that work and get this corrected.
