3.73 installed. strange noise !!

i had 3.73 gears installed and i find that i am having to deal with a whining noise evertime i decelerate. i know this can't be normal and the mechanic that installed it said it might be a improperly installed shim.. would this be correct???

sounds like he is right. what type of gears are they?

Sounds like they were installed too tight. There isnt enough backlash. i think there is supposed to be between .08" and .015" of backlash. I think right in the middle is the desired recipe.

the gears are from a 88' F250 truck.. also am i losing any performance factors with this improperly installed shim???? or the install being too tight??

They will just wear extremely fast. They need to be checked again.

The last set I had installed were used and the mechanic told me that with used gears it should be about .012" and for a new set about .008". The new ones should end up at about .012" after they are run a while.

Used gears

Were they FMS gears at least?

If not, the installer probably didn't check pinion depth and kept the stock shims on the pinion. Or he didn't measure backlash and a carrier shim kit needs to be purchased and shimmed correctly. Or he put too little or too much preload on the bearing spacer....Or he put the pain caps on backwards. Who knows? So many things can make gears whine when the installed doesn't have a brain.

thanks for everyone's imput.. always appreciated when people answer back!!! thanks again.. well i guess my car is going back to the shop to get the gears fixed.. i've put about 10,000 kms on the gears already.. i mean the car still pulls hard but i know for sure that they should pull harder.. i'll probably change the gears to 4.10s.. but thats still a maybe.. hopefully i can get this fixed soon.. money is the only thing that holds me back!

nice gotta love the blue........

sounds like the same as stated above.... shimmed improperly, i believe this is the reason my 4.10'S are coming out..

i love the blue.. i think its pretty rare to see a blue mustang.. i don't see very many blue GT's..
