I CAN TELL YOU GUYS FOR A FACT EXACTLY WHAT HIGHWAY MPG CHANGES FROM 3.31'S-3.73'S LESS THEN 2MPG.. I can tell you this for sure because i just drove the car back from california to NY last week.. I averaged 22.5mpg's at 75+ mph the whole trip (2700 miles) and I used to get 24 mpgs w/ the stock 3.31's on all my 500+ miles trips.. and after i fill up the 1st tank of gas and head on a long trip, I reset the avg mpg and dont reset it again till i get home, so these are real world, including stopping to eat, re-fill on gas, traffic, etc... And I can also tell you that going from 3.31's - 3.73's it turned my car from great looking to GREAT FUN!!

My general rule of thumb over the years for all my mustangs has been to go down 2 FRPP gear ratios. So basically:

3.31 to 3.73
3.55 to 4.10

Question....if going from 3.31 to 3.73 is good, why isn't 3.55 to 3.73 just as good?

Some people (me) are looking for a great daily driver gear setup. Who cares about going down 2 steps from what you already have? Why not just say "4.10 gears for everyone!!!!"...instead of offering 3.73 to someone with 3.31s?

Sure, you might not get as great a "jump" in seat of the pants going from 3.55s to 3.73s as you would going to 4.10s, but if the 3.31 driver can love 3.73s, why can't everyone? Or should we all just put 4.10s in our cars?

I'm interested in a great, all-around gear for daily, year round driving.

its all a matter of opinion and what you want to do with your car. i dont drive mine everyday so 410s were good for me. 3.73s would be a little extra boost over stock and would be good for everyday driving as well

I think the main reason people recommend going down 2 ratios is that going down just 1 is not very noticable. It costs a little bit of money to do the gear swap and its nice to really feel you've made a modification. And doing a gear swap is one of the very best ways to really make a difference in how your car performs. I had an 05 with a 5 speed and went from 3.55 to 4.10 and would highly recommend it as a must do mod.
