Some of the ones in 2004 had a slightly longer stroke, but they all were detuned to the same specs. The 3.8 is a 232ci 3797cc with a 96.5 mm bore and 86.4 mm stroke to the 3.9 is a 236ci 3857cc engine with it's 96.5 mm bore and 87.9 mm stroke, atleast the size of the engine was worked out from the bore and stroke.
i heard ford stopped making the 3.8 because they were getting ready to put the 4 liter into production for the 2005 model. im not sure why they switched to 3.9 tho i think someone else posted something about that a while ago
But no ford isent gonna make a performance v6, there just gonna keep the performance for there gt's.

From what i've heard you are correct about the reason for stopping the 3.8. I'm fairly sure that the 3.9 was in the windstar to start with and Ford put that in the later 04s.
A 3.9 L (238 in³) 12-valve version with 3.8 in (96.5 mm) bore and 3.46 in (87.9 mm) stroke was introduced in 2004. It had a one-year run in the Mustang before it was replaced by the 4.0 L Cologne OHC engine.

Ford spec sheets note this engine as 3802 cc (232 in³). The bore and stroke, however, work out to 3857 cc (236 in³). Another strange thing is that this engine, if specs are to be believed, is .010 in underbore compared to the 3.8 and 4.2.
It basically is a 3.8L, it's just the stroke is SLIGHTLY longer. The block, the pistons, cam, valves, heads, intakes, and so on are all the same. The crank and the rods are the only minute difference. Why they did it, don't know. They knew they were putting the 4.0 in the next year, and they tuned the 3.9 to the same output as the 3.8 so, there almost was no point.

4.5L SVO V6 was used in NASCAR some 20 years ago. So at one time they did make good V6's, and they are planning on making a DOHC 3.5L that puts out around 260-270hp if that's the number you use for comparisons. Now is that the 3.8L Grand Prix? A drag racer took one out to the track on friday, I think it was manual, and 16.3 was the best he could pull out of it. I'll stick with my stang.
well yes its the 3.8 but its the gt one..it does put out 260 but i just found out its supercharged. the 3.8 at the track must've been the base which pumps out 200.. my bad. and the grand prix comes standard with an auto tranny so unless he did a swap it was probably an auto.. but yea it upsets me to know my dads bone stock car can outrun me at least mine gets the chics
