I'm going to a 331 stroker to replace my old combo. I'm looking for reputable machine shops in the Chicago area.I've used DSS and had good success but I'm searching for other options.Tom at DSS built some good engines for me in the past but I'm afraid he got too big.The line bore was off on the last short block I could tell by the wear on the main bearings.I tried ATCO in Waukegan and after that fiasco I wouldn't bring a lawnmower to them. Lies and a Sh@t hone job,low oil pressure at idle and all the smoke you don't want. I'm not really looking to make more power(my current combo makes 500 rwhp). My drive train can't handle much more power and want to still keep it street able.I run a procharger D1 on pump gas.Any suggestion would be appreciated.I'll travel a reasonable distance for a quick turn around and personal service is a must.
Thanks,Paul

You may want to check this alternative, they are located in West Chicago...... View attachment 308799... why not go with a 347?

Thanks Joel, Do you know anyone who has used them? By the way after reading my thread I miss spelled the name of the shop that did the lousy work on my motor was Ateco not atco. I've been in contact with Ron at Fox Lake and might go with him.If I was going to a build a motor bigger than a 331 I'd start off with a 351 block. Thanks for the name of the shop.

Well, I've had really good results with two 331 shortblocks from M&R engines. They are in Glendale, CA but their shipping is reasonable and their prices are very competitive.

Fox Lake is top notch. They did some work for me. Very impressive.

68Keyblr,I emailed M&R this morning about doing a Boss 331 no return yet. Nice 68.I finished a 69 mach1 with a killer boss 302 4spd twenty years ago and the car is still beautiful. I keep trying to get him to lower it and put on some big brakes and wheels. He won't budge.
Thanks Paul.

EMW150, I've heard good things about Fox lake too. I think he ported a set of heads for me one time but I think was called Ron's head service or something like that?I'll probably see Bob Kurgan at Union Grove this weekend he usually runs true street. My friend runs modified super stock and I always see him in the pits but were too busy with our own car and never have time to talk to him.I'll make time this weekend I'm turning the wrench on the grill for some R&R and watch some races.I'll See who recommends.
Thanks again,Paul

Thanks I'd trade my '68 any day for a '69 Mach 1.

Matt is the guy at M & R that you want to talk to.

I Know he uses DSS and Fox Lake. But it doesn't hurt to pick his brain.I remember a long time ago when I had more time for racing and went to tracks all over the Midwest. We were first going to a fogger instead of plate nitrous system. We had a hard time getting a handle on it. A kind of a nitrous pioneer Bill Kuhlman had a car with two plates a fogger system and two dominator's.He was really consistent. We spent a evening with him and picked his brain. After many libations he spilled the beans. He was just running the two plates. He had the fogger on the car because NOS was his sponsor and that was their new product. From then on I was always skeptical of what everyone was really running. Anyway we figured it out. Our solution was leave on the plate and hit the fogger in second gear and hold on! It really marched then.

Rick lives here in central PA. I know him personally although haven't got to see him in years. Good guy, honest, and builds a ton of fast stuff.

As you probably saw in the post above he's from Penn. However I do know a guy local who does a great job as well. I just goin with Rick due to all of the convo we have had. I can give you his info if you need it. His name is Paul Anthony. His shop is called P.A.R.E. He built a High 9 second motor for this guy name Jeff who owns Ponydown custom turbo, who's shop is in Warren.

You didn’t mention the base-block you intend to use….so whatever you do, just be sure to use a stout block (non-stock) as the base for the 331.

Having stood next to Rick and watched him work he gets my vote. Of course EMW150 is pretty good with a wrench too. To bad he's not in the business. Mike

I'm in Florida and my next motor will come from FordStrokers.com, if I was in Chicago I'd be happy that I could go pick it up and get a great product with great service, AND not pay shipping.
