347 VS 351....the benchrace of a lifetime.

well i figure i can do a badass 347 for the same as a nice 351, and without having to screw with the swap parts

shortblock Keith Craft or DSS: 2500.00

AFR 185's: 1200.00

Rockers: 160.00

Lifters: 150.00

Pushrods: 60.00

Custom cam: 295.00

Timing chain: 40.00

gaskets and Misc: 150.00

thats 4555.00, i know there will be other minor expenses, but not another grand or more.

and ive already got the budget together for the tranny. thats a done deal.
where are you finding AFR 185 heads for 1200? the cheapest I found are 1,300-1,350... also is that custom cam gonna be over 550 lift? if its over that lift don't you need to upgrade the springs? I think that cost a pretty penny to upgrade ($200-$250 I think?). What about tax on the heads, shipping price?

that block for Keith are you gonna balance it? what oz? Im assuming you have 50oz flywheel and balancer but what happen if they recommand and balance it for 28oz? what kinda rockers are you getting? adding tax to that?

So what are the rest of your mods? Exhaust system, cooling system, fuel system?

i already have brand new:

50oz balancer and SPEC flywheel

255 in tank pump, 24lb injectors.

my exhaust has been done for like 3 years........if i do anything i might upgrade to LT's LATER.

Ive got a good radiator, and a Stewart WP already......

i was talking prices for the longblock. 5000.00

ive seen AFR's for 1249.00 thats close enough for me man damn........
the cam will determine the springs. so, ok add 500 to the price im still at around 5k.

shipping doesnt factor in, ill be getting the heads and most other stuff free shipping, and im only 4 hrs from Keith Craft...ill pick it up.

you said you want a 400hp n/a is that rwhp or fwhp? 24 is kinda iffy to support 400rwhp. What about Maf, Tb? Im not against you or argueing with you. I just want to point out some stuff that you're over looking. Im saying I thought I could do all of this under 5k but a good rule of thumb that I learn from my experience is what ever price you expect x it by 2 just to be on the safe side. Good luck with your 347 or 351 though. BTW, what website for the AFR 185 heads that cost 1249.00 w/ free shipping? I gotta get some for my 89 hatch.

I have power to justify me. Im make 375rwhp and 410tq, thats with fuel and timing tune. Im pretty sure if I get a chip program for na and nitrous I will be way over my expectation. Im already shock Im making 375rwhp.

I've seen your dyno, its very good for the set up. But, thats no way near even being close to needing a forged crankshaft. Thats about $300 more. For that amount of power, all your doing is adding more weight to the rotating assembly as forged IS heavier. For the record, that $2300 I was quoted included, oil pump, shaft, rear seal, cam installed and degreed, a main support, cast crank, forged rods/pistons and ALL parts and labor and machine work. Basically everything minus about $200 for shipping. Its not a run of the mill place, its a recommended shop that someone on hardcore50 runs. When I finally do get to do a 347, I will get back to you on price on what it costed out of my pocket after I sell my old stuff. I doubt it will go past $4,000 :) Remember, I have lots of stuff already and I am getting my current heads ported. If the car is 100% dead stock down to the air silencer, then it will cost more for a 347 then. majority of the people on here have half the needed crap already.

Oh, 1 more thing, i paid $5 for shipping from jd's when I ordered my full tfs combo :D

well I paid a little more for my machining and balancing but Im happy with it. You also gotta think I built this up from nothing but some 4.10s gear, flowmaster and an auto. I didn't have all of that stuff that people have. It was some major moding. I would like for you to give me a price when you're done w/ your motor but you gotta count the parts/price of the thing that you're gonna be using to make the motor work. For ex. let say you bought 30injectors a long time ago on your old setup but if your using it on the stroker (new setup) I want a price for it. Get what Im saying? :)

well my original argument was that i could build a longblock for 5000.

i never once said that i could redo the whole darn drivetrain for 5.........hell im gonna have 2 or more in the tranny.......

and if 24#s dont do it, ill jsut upgrade...it happens.

and i think that place that had free shipping on the cheap AFR's was www.jdsperformace.com

on the jdsperformance.com they only have 165 and they are 1325.00 for the 165??? do jds have 185?

holy crap, this thread is crazy. but my vote goes towards the 347 stroker. the 351 itself is a little expensive. and like someone said, its almost a waste to just have it a regular 351. so there goes some more money. 347 has more of a normal person's budget, not moneypits budget :rlaugh:

From what I've been researching, the only major expense for a 351 over a 347 is headers, considering that you're going with all new stuff. Plus you will need a new hood with the 351. Look at the DSS website, the 351 shortblock is $2299 where the 347 shortblock is $2499. The 351 is also much stronger and more durable than the 347.

Now going with a 351W based stroker....well thats a different story, price-wise

I guess for chits and giggles I can do that. But I wonder why I should add in something I bought last november (30lb inejctors for instance) I do get your point, but I have half the necessary stuff already and its currently on my 302. Already have the heads, maf, injectors, rockers for instance. It doesnt matter to me what it costs from scratch as im NOT doing it from scratch, im making a few things I have work. I WILL however add in head port work and stuff. I'm guessing around $4000? Who knows..

anyways...whoever said swapping to a 351 and keeping it a 351 is a waste? what kind of logic is that??...you can make TONS of power with a 351W without stroking it...

Anthony

I said that. Its just not worth it to spend all that extra money on necessary parts only for a 351. New hood + paint = $800 for example. All the little things add up quick for 351 swaps. I looked into it and decided a 347 was for me. Not saying you can't make power with a 351 because you damn well can! Its just that it costs more and I can't justify putting an aftermarket hood on my street sleeper :)

My original point was, I built a 347 stroker motor from the ground up that came close to 10k. Which a lot of people called bs on me.
