Hey, ive been waiting to stroke my motor out for a long time. Im thinking of doing a 347 but want a reliable truck but yet able to smoke some other cars and trucks when i need to. Which way should i go. 331 or 347 id like to get around 400 at the wheels. and dont mind spraying. What kits did you guys use and what does it put out? Thanks for all your help.

do you already have a motor because you should think of building a 351 for it or a 393 stroker. cheaper and better.

I would get a 331 just for a "little" increase of reliability (I have no proof of this, just own personal feeling), being you want it to last the longest. With a good set of heads, intake, and cam will net you 330-340rwhp, than a 75 shot will net you 400rwhp no problem. Sounds like a livable combo on the street no problem and will last a long time!!!

The majority of your 400 HP goal will be made up of the head, cam, and intake combination you put on there. If you have the intention of spraying then I'd go with all forged internals except for the crank. For that, you can stick with cast if you like.

For heads, there are lots of options. Either the AFR or Trickflow heads with pistons to put you over 9:1 compression will be good. Custom cam... I'll say again... CUSTOM CAM, will be what brings your combo together to give you the power you want. Make sure you've got your induction figured out prior to ordering the cam.

Last thought:
If you're going to stay N/A then let that be your guide for your final compression ratio (upwards of 10:1). If you have even the slightest inclination of one day adding boost then keep it below 9.5:1.

There are lots of ways to make the power you're looking for. I've only listed my preferred course. I just didn't want you to have the impression that stroking out to 331 or 347 is going to give you the HP goal you're looking for. IMO, stroking is an important part but probably one of the least important in terms of making HP. Of course exhaust and a host of other things are included in there as well.

Good Luck!

Go 347. The bigegr engine will make it easier for you to hit your 400rwhp goal because it won't have to be revved as high to achieve it. RPM is the enemy of the engine so in "theory" the bigger engine will be more reliable. But in actuality both will be perfectly reliable when built/machined by a good person with good parts.

And like Dagger said, the induction is important in making or breaking your goals.

Both will get you there easily with a good hci on it. I went with the 347. Now I wish I would have stroked a 351 to the max.

Yea i know that just stroking wont give me the numbers want, i was already gonna use the afr heads, theres just so muchto figure out yet. I keep going back and forth from a 331 with spray and good heads and cam and what not and also thinking of going with a 347 all motor . Its gonna be a daily driver for a while and then a weekend truck. Its a 94 ranger standard cab 2wd. What do you goys have for set ups and how much $ did you spend?

well now that you said it's a ranger, i would go with a 302 based motor since it is smaller in size and already too much for a little truck like that i think anyway. it will be a cool truck.
