Those of you who pay for Motortrend and keep up with Engine Masters, the latest episode threw me through a loop.

SBE 351w, tiny little AFR 165s, some OTS hydraulic roller, a Chinee intake and a 750 cfm carbonator made 435/435. The torque “curve” was more of a table. It fell off at 6100, but still. Who’da thunk?
Makes me rethink plans for this 351 block that followed me home the other day (and isn’t for the fox)

Don’t you love/hate it when an engine follows you home?

The pink truck?

It seemed like this was talked about in detail on Speedtalk a while ago. Didnt this air in the fall? Based on the head size seemed to be dyno trickery was I believe the consensus.

Why did they say that?
I watched it again and it was constantly making 400+ with each manifold tested.

Most I believe concluded that those anemic heads would not even crack 400hp in the real world. Then to pull that number all the way to 6,100rpm? All this with a mild hydraulic roller.

Bigger heads/solid lifters and cam: we're in the ballpark of my next build.

The heads in that segment were not stock heads, is that what you meant by anemic?

I got curious this morning. The flow charts for the AFR 165s and 185s areNT as far apart as I expected. ~20cfm @ .500
I'd be curious how the trickery is performed on the show, if indeed there is any.

All dynos have a “fluff” setting. Its how they keep them in line with each other. Some choose to “fluff” more than others. When my motorcycle tuner dyno tuned my Buell a few years back, we discussed this fluff. Not sure what the real term is, but they really can be scaled manually.

Super bummed bc this listed up today and within 18 minutes I contacted the guy and he had some one on the way to purchase it. Was excited and then sad. What a deal to miss on for 800 cash but wasn’t meant to be.

@CarMichael Angelo @General karthief yeah I noticed that but not sure what was up with that. Never got that far. A friend of mine sent me the link bc he is all about big cubes and raw NA power. I just got to ask the guy 2 questions and he said it was about to be picked up just after that. Oh well!!
